For long drives I typically just listen to satellite radio if I can. I say 'if' because I normally have a DVD on for the kids lol. But my go to is pop, dance, and all my marked favorites on my Apple Music Playlist.
For fun, like I tracked my sports car, I have the music off so I can listen to the engine, tires, other cars around me, etc. Same for off-road, I would have music off so I can list to any busted parts or falling parts or trail stripe screeches on my 02 Silverado lol.

I had never heard of most of them - but have to admit some good sounds in that selection :-)
my tastes in the wilderness switch pretty dramatically from what i listen to normally. when camping, i tend to listen to stuff like gabrielle aplin, jethro tull, john denver and bluegrass. when driving, maybe some sons of the pioneers or marty robbins, some rush and soundgarden lol.
back in civilization it's back to stuff like five finger death punch, drowning pool, and lots of 90s

Probably my favorite band is Dirtwire. It's super weird super awesome and the band that got me into the banjo, one of the members of that group is in another group called Beats Antique that I enjoy too. Both of those groups put on great live shows too. These are my go to groups for driving.
I also dig new grass, favorite band there is The Dead South. Probably one of the greatest live shows I have been to. I'll listen to them quite a bit, not really activity specific.
In the shop lately it's been lots of Misfits, I just dig em, also I admit to laughing at the twisted lyrics. My wife got me into them so it's also something we share. We have been known to sing Saturday Night together.
I used to listen to lots of black metal and industrial. But anymore I like things that are a bit less intense.

My wife thinks I have the weirdest playlist because one minute you hear electronic music like tropical house, then you will hear some classic rock, some 90s hits, and then out of nowhere some country. After an hour she usually puts on her playlist

1) I love paid Pandora, so I have a few playlists:
-"Dale Watson" which is basically "Outlaw Country"
-"Primus" which includes heavy amounts of Puscifer, some 9 inch nails, etc
-Best of the 80's
So, for "1)" that is something my entire family can agree on.
2) turn off the music because I am usually trying to hear what I am breaking, which is usually just the clearcoat on my paint job. Also, my wife is usually pretty pissed off at this point in time, last thing I need is a "soundtrack" to go along with her disappointment in me. She hates my total disregard for our truck when I am off-roading.
