Reminder and Day Run Review April 18, 2021

Reminder
: The meeting is indoors on Thursday April 22nd at Famous Dave’s BBQ at 4925 Kietzke Lane. We have the Room behind the Bar from 5:PM until 8:PM. The meeting will start around 6:PM so you can come early to eat since we patronize those establishments that help our group.

The Lagomarsino Petroglyph Day Run

Picture3.jpg

The Lagomarsino Petroglyph day run has come and gone. 11 Rigs pulled into the designated meeting spot near 10:AM in the morning. Then After Scott and Bill reviewed the Comms and safety issues for the run, 15 folks departed around 10:15 AM.
Picture4.jpg

Once on the dirt road at the beginning of the trail, everyone aired down so the ride could be a bit smoother and the tires had more grip of parts of the bumpy trail. Well…the grip part worked great. The bumps…ummmm….not so much.

An about two hours later after a few water crossings and a lot of ruts, rocks and whoopty doos (that’s a technical term for a rough trail) , we pulled into the petroglyph site. After a quick lunch, everyone went off to explore the petroglyphs.

Picture11.jpg Picture12.jpg

Picture13.jpg
After our exploring was over, we jumped back into our rigs and headed towards long Valley (with a few bumps along the way) and then aired up before jumping on Lousetown Road and heading home.

Thanks everyone who joined the adventure.

@HappyOurOverlanding

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make the group run because of my crazy work schedule these days. But I was wondering if anybody has a map of the route to get out to the petroglyphs. Appreciate your help.

Patches and Stickers

Stay tuned. We are looking at getting restocked on the Reno Overlanding patches and stickers.

Tonight’s Topic – Comms

After a debrief on the Petroglyph Day Run, Bill reviewed the basics on both Verbal and Non-Verbal Trail communications. For those who missed it, you can find the handouts in the file section of the Reno Overlanding Facebook page.

There are members that are deeply knowledgeable with Ham radios, setups, and linking to repeaters. So, if anyone has questions, please feel free to post them on the Facebook Page or refer to the OB Ham Net thread (US West - Ham Radio Weekly NET | OVERLAND BOUND COMMUNITY ) and hopefully the more skilled folk will chime in. Also, you can check out SNARS (Sierra Nevada Amateur Radio Society) our local Ham group, or AARL (American Radio Rely League) the National Association for Amateur Radio.

Happy Father's Day. here is the review of our latest Trail Run

A Crystal Peak and a Cove not there :-o – The Frenchman Lake Day Run Recap

The day started at 9:00 AM with 11 Rigs gathering at the Bordertown Casino rendezvous point and 1 Rig and a motorcycle met up with us at the trail head. We had a total of 22 adventurers as well as several well-behaved companions…dogs that is.
1624235686882.png

After a Trail Run and Communications briefing, we pushed off at 9:15 AM and headed north up 395, exited on Rt 70 at Hallelujah Junction, and then turned right onto route 284. The trip from Bordertown to the entrance of our pre-determined trail route USFS 24N44 took about thirty minutes.

1624235735920.png

At this point, once all the rigs were on the trail, we pulled to the side of the trail to allow Rigs to air down before proceeding up the trail.

1624235807656.png 1624235825087.png 1624235839111.png

We started at 5046 feet and wound our way through trees and brush which resulted in that oh so famous Nevada pinstriping. But hey, it’s a badge of honor as the Humvee owner stated.

Along the trail we stopped a few times to clear some downed dead trees to ensure safer passage. Additionally, we had to properly maneuver around some fallen boulders and freshly cut tree trunks. The Trail gave us some more obstacles this time but nothing we could not handle.

We ended the climb up at 7792 feet at Crystal Peak. Overall most of the trail was easy until the climb to Crystal Peak. At this point, the trail became steeper, rutty, and the dry loose dirt caused some slipping. A bit further up, there was a bit of a moderate rock-climb, but all were able to get through without difficulty. Once at the top, the views were great as some folks climbed to the top of Crystal Peak to get a better viewpoint and take pictures, while others enjoyed their lunch in the shade.

Check out the video on Reno Overlanding FB page of the final ascent.

1624236059376.png

After lunch, multiple discussions about each other’s rigs, and the hike up the top of Crystal Peak, we packed up and started our descent through more pinstriping greenery. Eventually our circuitous route took us back to 5446 feet where we aired up and then continued to the beach on the high side of Frenchman Lake.
1624236079539.png 1624236094252.png
Where did the Cove go??

Well, it looks like the drought cycle we’ve been in has taken its toll on Frenchman’s Lake. The Cove at Crystal Point was at least 50 feet lower than the first time the group did the run. Here is the lake in 2018 and two pics of the lake today.

1624236125192.png

1624236141096.png 1624236156853.png

At this point a few adventures decided to enjoy the cool water of the lake while others bid their goodbyes and headed home.

It was a fun day. Thanks for coming and the Reno Overlanding group looks forward to seeing everyone on the next run.

Oh...our next meeting is this Thursday June 24th starting at 6:PM at Famous Dave's BBQ in Reno.
