A friend and I want to head into Oregon and explore areas around and south of Mount Hood. We are looking at mid September this year, kind of a last-minute trip, and neither of us have been in that area before.

I was wondering if anyone can share things to be wary of, specific equipment I should think about for being in Oregon in September, etc. I was also hoping people could share scenic areas, gems, places to see, things like that.

I will be traveling with a Nissan Xterra built for offloading and I will have an overland vehicle systems off-road trailer in tow. I have a decent recovery kit including traction sleds, air pump, miscellaneous tools including an E tool, prybar, various hammers and I will be bringing some power tools light and impact gun for removing bolts and nuts as needed.

Any pointers and places to go or camp at would be much appreciated, thank you all!

Sounds like an awesome trip you're planning. Your setup already sounds well prepared, so I'd mainly suggest keeping an eye on changing weather, especially at higher elevations where conditions can shift quickly in September. A paper map or offline navigation is also a good backup since cell service can be spotty. As for places to explore, the Cascade Lakes area, Steens Mountain, and the Alvord Desert are all worth checking out if they fit your route. Have a fantastic trip!

Thanks! I bring paper maps and download them for offline use. Plus I have a garmin with SOS if things go south. I'll look into those areas, thanks for the suggestions

Sounds like you’re well prepared. Hope you find some great spots and have a safe trip!

Thanks! I forgot to ask if you happen to know if Oregon generally has campfire bands that time of the year? With the massive drought in the west I'm assuming they will.

You’re welcome! Yes, Oregon often has campfire restrictions during the summer, especially with dry conditions. It depends on the area and current fire danger, so checking with the local ranger station before the trip is a good idea. A backup plan for cooking is always helpful.
