I really don't like going down rabbit holes, especially when it involves something that I am currently doing and comfortable with...but my wife has been pointing out a lot of controversy with a lot of materials concerning food prep and storage. as I posted on this very thread a few years ago, I was quite happy reheating a cool-whip container of spaghetti in the microwave and eating it with a plastic fork. come to find out, heating plastic releases a lot of bad stuff and the food is directly absorbing it.
the wife started getting rid of all our plastic stuff due to "microplastics". of course I thought it was silly until I did a little checking and come to find out, it is a serious thing. even doctors are reporting extremely high levels of microplastics in peoples tissue and a lot of that is due to eating and drinking from plastic. one study showed that plastic cutting boards have a lot of cuts in them and that the cuts are small pieces of plastic that are coming off the board and going right into our food. pouring hot coffee in a plastic lined mug releases toxins and even bottled water sitting in the sun will release a lot of toxic chemicals into the water.
yeah, yeah...the sky is falling and all that, but there really is something to this. I bought some silicone collapsible cup thing and noticed that even after a lot of use and washings, it still had a strong chemical smell and pouring hot coffee into it made it even worse.. there was even testing done on nylon spatulas that pretty much everyone uses and sure enough, I checked mine and there were a lot of little pieces missing from the leading edge where the heat has broken it down over time and the unnoticed pieces were going right into my scrambled eggs without me realizing. started looking closer at Teflon coated things and even my best Teflon pans had flakes of the coating missing. pretty sure I know where they went...
a lot of people aren't going to care and will just dismiss it as conspiracy theory or overreaction or whatever, but there are some valid concerns with using plastic and silicone with our food prep and storage. ignorance is indeed bliss, because now that it was brought to my attention, I do have to take action and part of that is ditching all my plastic utinsils, cups, tumblers, plates, storage containers, etc... and switch to glass, metal and wood. (wood spatulas and spoons)
not trying to fear monger or preach, but since I was alerted to this, I figured I'd at least point it out in a post and y'all can do with it what you like. some of y'all are pretty cool and I'd like to see you stay in good health as much as possible
so yeah, the title says for us to 'overthink' this and for me, the OP couldn't be more accurate...
