Do we have a schedule/map planned out? I found one within the thread but not sure if that is the official plan. I also might have to bypass the water crossings by going north and hitting 15 and meeting you guys on the other side. It all depends if I extend differential breathers in time.

Hey Randy, I'll re-do the 'official' schedule post to confirm it, and then provide a document that everyone can access, but I haven't nailed it down quite yet.
Should be soon, but the rough plan is that there are several that are going to be out there on Thursday, myself included.
Some are staying at the Casino Thursday night. We'll meet up on the trail on Friday morning at various times to try and accommodate as many as possible.

It's pretty tough wrangling everyone's schedule to have one meet time, so I'm trying to get a handle on some good exit time strategy.

...please stand by! (and watch this thread for the latest updates. I'll try and edit post #1 with the pertinent information as well)

Dan.

Cabo - we are headed out early on Thursday or maybe on Wednesday afternoon with a stop over. Safe driving - perhaps a caravan back on Sunday?

Man, would of loved to, but, I have my spring break, so we will be heading to Joshua Tree and Sequoia National Forest after! However, we need to get up and do some overlanding in and around New Mexico sometime.

Look forward to meeting you!

Cheers

Anyone know the total mileage of this road ? I'm trying to do some gas planning
It's about 140 mi but we will have some detours. I'd go with maybe 180 miles as an estimate and work from there. My FJ has a 19 gallon tank and I'll get maybe 10 mpg off road, so I'm carrying an extra 5 gallons in a jerry can as backup. Even that feels like a thin margin.

Don't forget that you'll get worse mileage with your tires aired down and doing a bunch of stop-start in a big group.

And don't forget to account for the inevitable idling

When does a thread become too big? I think this thread is too big, but how to handle it another way? There's gotta be a good solution.

The discussion about Fuel, among other things, is laid out in Post #404, but basically says the above, an extra 5 gals in the case of an FJ or Tacoma, etc. would be prudent. There will be idling, stopping, detours, side-trips, etc. Plan accordingly. Very few places to get gas once we leave the trailhead.

so we will be arriving around 2am Friday morning. Any good off the road spots to flip open the tent near the meet up?
You must be leaving about the same time as me Thursday. I'm hoping to get there by 2am and would like to know a spot to camp too. Doesn't make sense to pay for a hotel for 5 hours.

@fj80toyman I'd suggest a new thread, "Mojave 3/24/17 Consolidated Info" that has all of the pertinent information in post #1 .... I would sift through this thread and do it for us, but I'm already putting in 10-12 hour days... I'm in boots off it's beer thirty mode around 20:30 each night right now

I might be in the same boat, so this info would be nice

Hey guys, we'll be camping off Needles Hwy, check out this recent post for some map details and GPS coordinates.
Really close to Avi Casino, just north a bit.

I'll be there from Thursday afternoon, should be lots of open spots there to raise a roof (top tent), or throw out a bag.

Thanks everyone! I have looked through this epic thread and don't see any talk of firewood. Sorry if I missed it. Any other pyros out there planning on bringing some wood? I like big campfires and there will not be much wood to gather out there, just a reminder. If everyone brings a little we can have some fires.

I believe I read two bundles each. Don't remember where

Double check your wench. I walked by my Jeep and on a whim just reached down and tried and flip the lever to free spool, and it wouldn't budge. Pulled the wench off and took it apart. What a mess, caked grease, rust, and corrosion. The only semi deep water crossing I remember going through is at Afton Canyon last year. Other than that, it would have to be rain water and washing the Jeep. So make sure everything is ship shape before heading out. It is a Warn XD9000i. I do have a Smittybilt XRC10000 as backup just in case, but prefer the Warn.

I plan on bringing quite a bit of wood and a propane fire pit as a backup fire source.
