Hello and welcome to the OB family.

Hi All, and thanks for adding me to the group!

I'm based in Tucson AZ and enjoy exploring the Southwest. I currently have an HD Truck with a large slide-in camper, and I'm looking to downsize. I got this rig primarily for fishing and hunting base camp, but I want to downsize to be able to more easily take some shorter trips, and farther from home trips. I have lots of experieince car camping, backpacking, RV camping.

I'm researching my next build. Leaning towards a full size truck (F-150) and a topper. I sometimes tow a SxS (just under 4,000lbs with trailer). Between that and being 6'1"/210lbs I want the extra space of a 6.5 foot bed.

I have TONS of questions, but since I'm in the early stages here are my main concerns right now:

1. Good, comfortable sleep is hands down my #1 priority. I'm leaning towards a truck topper with a pop-up, e.g. OVRLND, Topo Topper, etc. I'm a 200lb plus side sleeper, and I've slept on 4" memory foam and woke up with sore hips. So I'm really leaning toward the OVRLD toppers because you can add more bed height and a ticker mattress. But I'd love to hear others experience, any bigger folks getting a good nights sleep on a 2-3" mattress (like the ones offered by most other topper manufactuerers?). I know I can add addiitional foam/bedding/etc when I setup but I'm not crazy about carrying/storing and setting up more bedding when I camp.

2. For the truck I was looking at adding Roadmaster Active Suspension to help with the extra weight, seems like an easy inexpensive way to go. Anyone have experieince with that?

Hi everyone new to the forum. Thank you for adding me.

I live in Palm Coast, Florida. I just purchased a 2024 Bronco Sport Big Bend. Looking to do some tent camping, fishing a traveling. I have grown up adventuring new places, but this vehicle should help me do more of that. I have already seen some of the posts and wow, I am excited.

Hi Brooks,

Greetings,

my name is Sebastian and I’m originally from Erfurt, Germany. I’ve lived in South Tyrol for four years and now live in Weiz, Austria. I’m a mechanical engineer and I develop systems for overlanding and drinking water treatment. I also have a blog that I run with my wife, where we write about our builds and experiences (weissexplorers.com). I deliberately design open systems that you can repair and understand yourself. I think that’s very important when you’re out in the wilderness for long periods of time, far from civilization.

We got into overlanding with our Land Cruiser J120, which now has over 266,000 km on the odometer. We bought it used in 2009 and most recently, we traveled through northern Spain in it, covering over 4,500 km in 2 1/2 weeks. We love traveling far from tourist areas and want to discover these countries at our own pace in our vehicle.

I enjoy sharing my expertise especially around water filtration and I am looking forward to a great exchange with y'all!

Cheers, Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

Welcome to Overland Bound!

I am one of the OB Ambassadors in Europe. Please do not hesitate to contact me for questions regarding Overland Bound, and the App or information regarding overlanding.

Local information for any of the OB regions can also be found in the Overland Bound by region forum. Each region has its own sub-forum. Austria, for example, belongs to the region MidEurope. So, this link leads to the MIdEurope subforum. Feel free to introduce yourself to your local area here.

Please take a look at the Rally Points for planned events. There you can filter by region. There are plenty of meetups planned for 2026 for Europe already and more to come. Our annual Spring Meetup is already over but the next meetup is next week in Sweden: OB Scandinavia meetup organized by @Bengt N

We also do a virtual campfire once a month, there are always members from many regions of Europe. This is a relaxed online talk about overlanding, trip plans, gear, everyday life and more with like-minded people. The next is planned foe end of this months. Just join us next time if you like.

If you have any other questions just ask, please. Always happy to help.

Safe travels,

Bjoern
