Am I right in thinking that a license issued in any particular country is only valid in that country?

For example, if I get a license in the UK, can I legally transmit while visiting another country?

Yes you can, providing the issuing country has related agreements with the country you visit.
It also depends on the type of ham certification you have. A more advanced cert may allow you to transmit in a country whereas you may be restricted with a lesser one.
It's messy..

Many thanks. Pretty much what I was thinking might be the answer.

Many thanks guys. I have read the RSGB info and it seems to be able to take advantage of the reciprocal agreement, a full licence is needed, it doesn't apply to Foundation or Intermediate.
So, that's just stepped up my game .....
