I’m between a New Rebel or an older Raptor

Wut about the 2019 internet designed Jeep Gladiators?

Me personally I'd pick the raptor, I've heard some gruff about that airbag suspension on the rebel. And I bought my raptor with 60 k on it, but I have rebuilt the shocks and replaced both upper and lower ball joints. It is a good solid truck. The 6.2 isnt the best on fuel mileage, but it's fun to drive. And that motor is a strong motor. I haven't had any issues with it. But the downside to buying into an older vehicle is servicing them. My next project is replacing the 16 spark plugs that the 6.2 has. I've had this truck in just about everything, mud, sand, snow etc, I've never felt like the truck couldn't do it, unless it's narrow. But the power is there, the suspension is great, it's a great place to start from. These first gen raptors started something, I feel like in 20 or 30 years, these first gen Raptors are going to be like the old mustang's. Good luck on the purchase

You aren’t kidding about them being wide. I measured mine when I got it and it’s 90” wide from outside of tire to outside of tire. Haha

Its definitely something to get used to, but more often than not picking a good line and trimming some of the over grown branches and what helps alot. The real downside of owning a raptor is the special pricing on all raptor specific parts.

I go through a lot of vehicles and over the last 5 years I have had a 2014 Tundra CM, 2016 Ram Rebel, 2017 Tundra CM, and now a 2019 Titan XD (Gas). If I had to pick my favorite truck it would be the 2017 Tundra. I personally like the look of the truck and they last forever. My least favorite truck was the Ram Rebel. I absolutely hated the two tone paint job on it, the interior was by far the best, and the air suspension is mediocre at best for offroading, but very nice on the highway.

To those wondering: I was hit by a drunk driver in the 2014 Tundra, i deployed to AFG and my wife bought me the rebel, when I got back I promptly traded it in for a 2017 Tundra. I was rearended by a semi on I-35 in the 2017 Tundra (totaled) and then I got a new Nissan titan, which so far I love. I decided on the gas over the diesel, but wanted an XD for the longer bed, better brakes, and stiffer body. The interior is absolutely boring, compared to the american trucks, but there aren't that many on the road.

San Antonio has an abundance of Tundras on the road and Jacked up diesels that spend most of their time roaming the target parking lot.

Now that I am retired form the Air Force I am considering giving my Titan to my son next year and getting a Raptor. I will never use it for its intended purpose, but I've always though they looked BA and are more than capable for what I would need it for.

That's a big reason why I went fullsize F250.

Driving across Columbus Ohio twice every weekend in the winter snow, surrounded by ignorant crazy Prius lemmings, it's not safe to drive anything smaller.

There is no 2019 Gladiator, the first model year for the JT is 2020

I guess I was extra-SPESHUL yesterday. I guess the ones I'm seeing deeply discounted in my area are 2020s. Still, plenty of dealers have them just sitting on lots starting to get cheaper...

why would you look Nissan Titan, it can be even XD model with diesel. There are about 30-35K with ~ 50K on them. The Pro-4x has locker, plus available upgrade 1.2 K for the front locker.
Also Tundra, it's last forever.
In term of RAM trucks, I wold not buy a new Raptor, instead will get used Poerwagon, if you have 40+ K .

look under a tundra. The chassis on them are flimsy non boxed and made from metal that rusts if you sneeze on it. You should see the chassis graveyard behind our local dealership. No thanks on the tundra or Tacoma.

Guess we're all pretty opinionated after all......
Imagine that going onto the internet, ask a vague question and get opinions. If your looking for folks to talk only about one brand id suggest going to a dedicated vehicle forum to have folks confirm to you you made the right decision. Otherwise your going to get multiple vehicle suggestions.

He's got a point though

Toyota quality has slipped about as much as Dodge and Ford have improved. T might still be the most reliable, but not by enough to matter anymore. And nowhere near enough to make up for the obsolete frame and engine.

I don't think any of us are saying a Raptor can't "Overland" or isn't good offroad (to a point, it's much better for certain things compared to a Jeep but not as good at others). I think what we were saying is that we'd all be very leery of used Raptors. If you can find the old-man owner who just kept it in the garage and waxed it, that's great. But Gen1 Raptors are getting affordable enough they're on their 2nd or 3rd owners, who might be flat-bill kids who go into the desert and think they're BJ Baldwin...

Raptors are perfect for lightweight overlanding. Kinda lame for crawling. All my trips are fullsize friendly dirt roads and hwy. Raptor excels at both. Just don't pretend that it can haul a camper.

But do yourself a favor and buy new.

Pretty much sums it up. Also don't fool yourself into thinking it's a *real* trophy truck. It's impressive for a stock truck off the showroom floor, but it has its limits.

Way too heavy for anything racy. Perfect for canaduh's highways to nowhere. If you hate paint.

What is overanding or off road? Off road on rocks is not overland it's pure off road and easy to damage your truck and all your trip goes to South.
To me Raptor is perfect overland truck, it comfortable on road, gravel and can find you a good camping spot where is not many cars can reach . Rubicon is crap on road but great on rocks. But it's not mean Rubicon is great truck. Look most guys have 4runner does well on and off road, Raptor does better both then 4 runner .
