My main "overlanding" rig is a 2015 Taco TRD Pro, while it works well for my son and I, it quickly runs out of space when camping with his scout troop and as I am the troop committee chairman I tend to be the collection point for other scouts gear.

This will be a condensed post as I have already been working on it.

So I picked this up February of last year, Its a 1989 GMC SLE that was a conversion by a company called Trail Wagons in Yakima WA (just up the freeway from here). The company has been out of business for several years now, they mainly did van conversions, were the creators of the Chinook campers that were installed on Toyotas, and created an H1 camper but i cannot find much info on the Suburbans. I can see extra wood trim, lift kit, fiberglass running boards which incorporate the fender flares as a one piece unit (not sure i like that or that they will stay), a roof rack of sorts, 3" magnaflow exhaust but not sure if that was a conversion part or just added later, and there was a TV at one point judging by the switch labeled TV lol. other than that it is a regular SLE with a TBI 5.7, 700R4, NP241, I need to look at the gearing as it feels like it has pretty good get up and go compared to other suburbans ive owned. It is a low mileage unit with 82K original miles, the previous owner started to sand it down for repaint then passed away, so now it has bare metal and surface rust going on as it was last registered Jan 2020.

it has 4" lift springs and lowering shackles to net a 2" lift (not sure what their thought process was)

new tire wheel combo? 37's

no? ok 33's

37's went on here but more on my vehicle A.D.D later

I got hosed on a late night purchase that was bent

so I started building my own

The only rust I have found in it, not a problem anymore

The suburban has always had a stalling/spit and sputter issue and since it has sat for at least 5 years if not longer it needed lots of maintenance and was making me pull my hair out with issues I could not find. Got a full tuneup, new distributor, EGR valve, TPS, CTS, IAC, coil, Fuel regulator, fuel pump, ......

after all the new parts it still acted up and i was tired of it and was going to ditch the TBI and go carb, pull the intake and no wonder it was acting up

and all the buildup in the valley is not helping

Put some glass lens LED headlights in

new speakers and stereo

all the tie rod ends are replaced, the tie rod was changed out for an ORD Design solid unit, the front springs were replaced (dealing with a leaning issue)

I won GM of the month for this picture over on CK5.com

I picked up Tuner Pro RT and a USB/OBD1 adapter and learned enough to make myself dangerous and one of the issues was a vacuum leak even though all the intake, throttle body, EGR gaskets are all new and the hoses look fine. I pull the hoses connecting the TB, EGR, EGR solenoid, and capped them off... truck runs fine... so I start adding hose by hose back into the system and retesting, everything is running fine until I put the last hose back in between the EGR and the EGR solenoid and it acts up again. The hose looks fine but it acts up every time I reinstall it, hard to argue the logic.

The fiberglass steps are not that great and need work, im not sure i like them anyways

so I removed them for now

This brings us to current, its taken almost a year and a half to get to this point as we are very busy and the before mentioned vehicle A.D.D. lol while working on this I also have an 87 Samurai ive been building, the stepside chevy took some attention for a while, then the 72 K5 blazer.

I also picked up a bunch of parts and built a rear axle for the suburban (the front needs a new 44 housing to build) 4.56 gears, posi rear, zip locker front, chromoly shafts, steel diff covers, cross over, ORD crossmember.

Also picked up a parts truck with one tons, 37 military tires on H1 beadlocks, DIY4X dash, shackle flip, ORD front body/spring mount. Most of these parts were slated to go into the stepside along with ACES fuel injection for the cammed 350 in it, DIY4X A-bomb hanger/winch mount.

By this time ive changed my mind 50,000 times and am still trying to decide what im going to do.

Current thought is install the A-Bomb, 4" front springs, shackle flip, 64" rear springs, ORD crossmember, and H1 wheels/tires. OOOOOrrrrrr install all that in the stepside and put the built 44/12 bolt in the suburban with the other 37's and beadlocks.

The 33s look good!

if you’re looking to keep the patina, you might consider something like Sharkhide to seal it and stop any further rust progression.
