    Ham radio

I got my technician license in a week using hamstudy.org to prepare. Do I know all the information someone with a Technician license should know? NOT YET! But I have my ticket, I'm learning, and I can legally talk on some of the amateur bands. 1. Read through all the questions and answers once...

Probably not. Why do you ask?

Seeking Basic but Decent Handheld Recs - Be specific

You said lowering the power makes the GMRS radio an FRS radio. If that were true you would be able to hand the radio to an unlicensed person. Turning down the power on a GMRS radio doesn't make it an FRS radio.

Seeking Basic but Decent Handheld Recs - Be specific

That's wrong. If someone without a GMRS license uses a GMRS radio even with the output power set to low they're technically not doing so legally. The use case that OP is asking for is to be able to hand their unlicensed friend a radio and be able to talk with them. Muddying the waters with this...

Seeking Basic but Decent Handheld Recs - Be specific

As far as I know there aren't any radios currently being manufactured that are legal for both GMRS and FRS. Prior to the 2017 FCC changes they did make "dual service" radios. I don't know the status of those radios, or if it's legal to use them if you can find them. If I remember correctly, the...

    Comms on the road?

There are probably pros and cons.

    Comms on the road?

No. The FCC will grant FM modulation on all 40 existing CB channels. https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-374114A1.pdf

    Comms on the road?

I wonder what the effect of the FCC allowing FM on CB will be?

    Tablet mount show and tell.

I just installed a custom mount that I designed and 3D printed myself. It's held to the dash with four 50 lb neodymium magnets, so I can remove it. 99% of the time I don't ever adjust the climate control, so I don't mind covering those up while I'm using the tablet.

New to Area - Bellingham, WA

Mostly for work. (There was a woman, but that's a story for another time). I got my B.S. Computer Science degree from WWU in 2001, and there weren't any opportunities in the Ham for the kinds of projects I wanted to work on (mostly defense projects). I went to work for Boeing and worked at...

    Ask About Gaia GPS!

Yes, but I think it would be better to have it layered on the map with your other route information instead of having to run different apps for various sources of information (that's the point of layers).

    Ask About Gaia GPS!

Can users create their own layers? As a new ham I was thinking it would be useful to have a layer for repeaters that displays details like frequencies, tones, effective range (maybe have a ring around each one), etc. Basically information like repeaterbook.com has. That way you could find...

There's a place to add our ham callsign, but not our GMRS callsign.

HAM Radio Call Sign Check-In Thread

KC3SVJ checking in from Annapolis, MD. Passed my Technician exam last night. Two weeks ago I bought a Boafeng uv-5r just to see what I could hear. Figured out how to find and listen to repeaters, then got frustrated that I couldn't talk back . So last week I started using hamstudy.org a couple...

If you had to pick just one to start…

To be fair, you don't actually know that. I've heard a lot of people say things with complete confidence that turned out to be completely wrong.
