Diesel Fuel in California, will pretty much all be B5, contining 5% Biodiesel with a few exceptions. This has to do with carbon credit trading, because some of the refinaries in mostly in southern California don't meet clean air standards, so they are alowed to continue operating if they put...
PS
Top-tier gasoline does have a little more additive than most unbranded gasolines, although some unbranded gasolines can be Top-tier. Most major brands will be Top-tier, but read the pump to confirm this. Some Brands are nothing more than marketing companies so if this is important to you...
Diesel can be a real problem if you plan to leave North America or Western Europe. Newer diesels require clean ultra low sulfur diesel, because of the particulate filter (DPF). One tank of high sulfur diesel will very quickly clog the DPF leading to extremely expensive repairs, and ULSD isn't...
I would say, 4 years is pretty good for an air mattress. You can make it last longer but it probably wouldn't be comfortable.
The foam mattress in my RTT will probably last 10, but it's not really as comfortable as my Megamat.
What ever you decide to do getting out of a nylon tent into a canvas tent is life changing. At night you exhale a lot of water vapor and that becomes trapped inside of a nylon tent, but not with a canvas tent because they breathe. Seeping in the low 20's I have awoken with ice crystals all...
Dedicated circuit to the battery with 10 AWG wire, with a fuse at the battery. Many car eletrical systems use 18 AWG wire and were never designed to handle this kind of load. Cut off the cigarette lighter plug with enough space to connect an "Anderson 50A" plug to is as well, just in case you...
Although I haven't used them since going to the roof tent, I have and love my two "Exped Megamat 10's" single and duo. Warm cool and confrotable in the worst of conditions.
There is no room under the front seats at all.
The factory stereo amplifier is under the passenger back seat. I no longer put anything under the driver's side back seat because the bulkhead connectors are there bringing the 2/0 wire up from the engine compartment. I really don't want any...
On those quiet winter nights I do well enough on 160m to have a decent QSO! 2 years ago durring the 160m contest worked Florida from California at 70 mph.
The ALS-500 is a little larger than 2 radios. LOL! I wanted to squeeze another ALS-500 in in an attempt to get 900 watts on 160m. When your antenna amounts to nothing more than a rubber duckie, on the "top band" you need brute force. One of these days maybe i'll get my hands on a metron...
I don't have that kind of space in a Grand Cherokee. Getting a 2nd VHf/UHf radio in for APRS + the HF radio and AMP is a tight squeeze much less a dedicated HF radio, amp, and HF antenna for winlink. Pluss the DC to DC converter & solar charger. It's getting crowded back there.
Run a long usb cable up to your drivers seat from the radio, and use the IC-7100's internal sound card. YOU Cn do everything from receiving WEFAX to sending email over HF.
I use the SD card almost daily. I keep a profile for phone, winlink & data. This way I can setup flat audio for data modes.
Winlink really needs flat audio to function properly, because it is a wide data mode.
I run the IC-7100 in my rig, and IMO It is the best mobile HF radio on the market.
IC-7100
ALS-500
DX Engineering MM1 UN-UN (For 60~160m)
HI-Q Parana (160m version)
2/0 wire from the battery to the radios.
I mount the control heads of the IC-7100 and CS800D from the side of the dog house using a panavise pedestal mount. Even handled "Saline Valley Rd." DVNP tested and approved! LOL!
I operate moble on 160m - 15m, 6m, 2m, and 70cm. Yes all of these bands @ 70 mph
I don't think 10m is really a band band and Techs have a huge area on the band, but here are better alternatives. VHF and UHF offer smaller antennas, portability, and repeater use.
