If you had to pick just one to start…

The FT-891 and IC-7100 are both waaay to rich for my blood but I did look into the MARS mod a little bit. One of the dual band radios I had been looking at is the Icom 2730, it’s affordable and Icom has a solid reputation, and I like that I can have a more discreet installation. I found the...

If you had to pick just one to start…

That’s fair. I don’t mind spending the time to learn, it’s an acquired skill like anything else. I just don’t have a desire to dive down the rabbit hole, so to speak. GMRS was a consideration mainly because it’s easier (no test, just pay the man) and the license covers my family. But repeater...

    Starting Over

It’s good to be back and I’m looking forward to getting out and exploring again. I’m honestly more excited to get my boys out there. Our oldest is four now and he just loves nature and being outdoors.

    I’ll just leave this here.

If you had to pick just one to start…

Would you pick Ham or GMRS? How useful is GMRS compared to amateur radio? I’m leaning really hard toward getting my tech license but I don’t want to go through the hassle if it’s not really necessary. Either way I go it’ll mainly be for emergencies, for example if I’m unable to get cell service...

    Starting Over

Hey, all. It’s been so long since I’ve been active on this site I figured I might as well start from the beginning. The last time I was here I was slowly outfitting a Ford Explorer, but unfortunately it was totaled during a snow storm and I found myself in need of another vehicle. With a baby...

    Anybody drive something...

Can’t blame you there. We gotta make due until the Traverse and Cube are paid off and then I’ll be on the hunt for another rig. XJs and WJs are stupid cheap right now so that might end up being the way we go.

    Anybody drive something...

I’m a little late to the party but I ended up in a 2014 Traverse after some bad weather and worse luck had my Explorer wrapped around the front of a Toyota Tundra. Sadly my Traverse is only FWD but but I’ve had that thing down plenty of Iowa level B roads without any problems. I just stay off em...

Ogre's 05 Ford Explorer: The Unlikely Overlander

So I didn't mention what we ended up buying to replace the Explorer. Our current needs dictate we have something with plenty of room for the kid, the dogs, all our gear, etc. And most importantly we need something reliable and somewhat fuel efficient since it's my daily and I rack up a lot of...

Ogre's 05 Ford Explorer: The Unlikely Overlander

Sadly, no. Checked out the Pathfinder, an Xterra, and even a Frontier and I felt really cramped in them even with the driver seat all the way back. And getting the infant seat to fit meant moving the passenger forward, quite a bit, which was a no go for my wife's long legs. We're not small...

New (baby friendly) rig - Xterra?

Yeah I'm about 6'3" but I have short legs and long torso so leg room isn't usually a problem. And she drives the Cube every day (well, not now lol) so I'm not so worried about her being able to get a car seat in and out, as I am just getting it to fit without having to push the front seats up...

New (baby friendly) rig - Xterra?

It doesn't particularly have to be a Nissan but I have always liked the Nissan platform and I'm familiar with them. I've just never gave thought to how kid friendly they are. An older 4Runner wouldn't be a bad option by any means, if I could find one within my budget.

New (baby friendly) rig - Xterra?

Yeah, the radiator issue is familiar to me. My brother in law happens to also work at the same dealer as a master tech and I worked there for a while myself. I won't lie, the available resources is a big determining factor with going Nissan. Good point on the rear door. I could see that...

New (baby friendly) rig - Xterra?

With my beloved Explorer now in her final resting place and the insurance payoff pending, I'm on the hunt for another vehicle. I've got my heart set on a second generation Xterra, probably in the 2005-2007 range for budget reasons. But with our son due in May I want to make sure there's room...

Ogre's 05 Ford Explorer: The Unlikely Overlander

Yeah I was excited myself. This was one of those vehicles you don't see in the overlanding community. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, though. Insurance should cover the payoff on the loan and leave me a little bit for a down payment. There's an 05 Pathfinder at my wife's work that's just...

Ogre's 05 Ford Explorer: The Unlikely Overlander

I was hoping the next update I posted would be a positive one. With the baby due in May I haven't done any work on the Explorer but I had money set aside for a fridge install, tires, a different roof rack, lighting, and a new awning. I was waiting for warmer weather to do anynofnthe work but...

    Water Storage (Merged Thread)

Ok so I've been busy as hell at work and with the baby due in a few months I have had all of my attention directed everywhere BUT working on the Explorer. Since it's also cold as hell I have zero desire to be in our unheated garage so I've been quite literally spending my free time at the...

Offline maps for tablet or smartphone....what app do you use?

That does help. I'm currently trying to download my State (Iowa) and just the area around Des Moines and south to the Missouri state line is still downloading since yesterday. I was on wifi all night so I'd have thought they would have downloaded by now. Is it better to download the maps on a...

Offline maps for tablet or smartphone....what app do you use?

For those running Gaia, how much storage space do the maps take up? I just switched to a 64gb iPhone 7+ so I might run Gaia on it to try it out. I've been holding out until they add routing for Android since I can just store everything on SD cards but I really want to try this out.
