I have a tarp awning that clips onto eye bolts screwed into the shell. I made it so I can set it up on either side, or the back. The net off the back is adequate, when combined with a thermacell. Worst case, I’d get in and button up, the windows and roof vent all have screens.
I sleep in the back of my truck too. I have an old insulated shell, and am working on a bed platform. It’s a 6 foot bed, and I’m 6 feet tall, so if I’m all buttoned up, I have to sleep diagonally. I’m looking at a spray on bedliner for more insulation, but I’ve slept warm in temperatures in the...
I have the sickness too! My buddy just gave me a model 425 stove, so I only need a 425B to complete my 425 series collection. That goes with the 2 413s. No 3 burner yet, but I just missed on at a garage sale by about 2 minutes. I have 3 working 220 series lanterns, and 3 or 4 more waiting on...
Don’t let the weather stop you. Last February I spent a cold rainy weekend at the Geologists Cabin, it was one of my best trips to Death Valley. I did worry a bit though, it rained a lot, and the only ways out were through canyons. But I made it out through Goler Canyon without any problem.
You can’t see the stars because the moon is so bright! Panamint Valley California, Thanksgiving 2018. I met an Overland Bound group for a run the next morning.
So the next challenge is: your rig at your first Overland Bound group run.
My latest two purchases are for water, a 10 liter MSR dromedary bag, and a 1974 dated Coleman steel belted jug. The jug needs a new gasket at the spout, but oldcolemanparts.com has them.
I don’t like the current design trend of sharp angles and straight lines, I like curves. And while the stated 500 mile range sounds great, a fully equipped 4 wheel drive will certainly get less range, and there aren’t any charging stations out in the boonies. Carrying some spare fuel isn’t a...
The usual meeting place when we aren’t going on a run is the Mission Grove shopping center, 321 E Alessandro Blvd. Riverside, CA 92508. I’ll try to make it too.
There is no perfect system, there are pros and cons with everything. That said, I prefer sleeping in my truck with a camper shell. The biggest con is having to unload everything at night, and reload in the morning. But I’m off the ground, and my shell is insulated, and weather tight. No dealing...
I also have a Harbor Freight. 150 psi compressor, and I’m happy with it. I’ve been using it for almost 2 years without a problem. It’s a great deal at around $40 when you use the coupon.
