    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

The purpose "protection against wildlife" is listed right on the temporary import form as a valid reason for importing. It's also spelled out in the customs D memos on the subject. Trust me on this, I know of what I speak. That officer was dead wrong.

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

It depends where you're going and what you're doing. If you're going way into the back country where encounters with bears and cougars are likely, sure. If you're going shopping in downtown Vancouver, no, they're not going to let you import it for defense against wildlife :P

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

Perhaps you're getting mixed up between restricted and non restricted. Anyone with a license (including temporary license holders) may carry a non-restricted firearm for defense against wildlife. This is one of the purposes explicitly permitted for foreign nationals to import firearms...

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

To clarify, defense against wildlife is one of the reasons explicitly allowed for bringing guns into Canada. I believe I've mentioned it already.

12 gauge shotgun can generally gets the job done quite effectively heh.

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

Definitely don't recommend trying to smuggle guns through Canada either. Jail time and deportation for life is the likely result. If anyone does show up at the border with their guns accidentally - ie, took a wrong turn and didn't mean to come to the border - just declare all firearms to the...

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

No, it's not as bad as England, but if our clown prince PM gets re-elected in October, it surely will be. What most people do is just ship their restricted or prohibited firearms to Alaska via Fedex or whatever, and transit through with their non-restricted stuff documented on the temp license...

    Rig Photos

Hope I git to be inyo national forests someday too! :P Don't worry, I'll leave no trace inyo forest.

    When is enough really enough?

You could have two sets of wheels and tires and swap them as the occasion requires, if you're so inclined.

    When is enough really enough?

This made me think of you
  11. CR-Venturer

    When is enough really enough?

How on earth do you misplace a set of wheels? :P

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Yeah, and then I finally decided to improve my departure angle and access to my recovery points - been considering this for a while.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

After driving it to and from work, I Jacked it up with the new-to-me jack stands I bought off FB Marketplace for $10, crawled underneath to start measuring and thinking about how to build a skid plate for the carrier bearing. While I was at it, I noticed that the safety hangers and the carrier...

    What is your rigs name

That's an awesome console. I did something similar with mine by using a 20mm mortar can bolted down in place of the fold down table the CR-V comes with. I've never seen anyone make a console by using the cans sideways, though - very clever.

    When is enough really enough?

This is why I'm fairly certain that if I ever did buy a new or almost new rig, I would spring for top level ceramic coating. If you're already spending 30-50k on a vehicle, what's another 2k to make the paintwork essentially bulletproof and totally hydrophobic?
  16. CR-Venturer

    When is enough really enough?

How good of a vehicle could you get for that $5000? Is there an option to sell it or trade it in to get something better? 5000 seems awfully high for 1 year's worth of maintenance. I don't think I've even spent $1200 on mine, and that's including a new radiator installed, building a roof rack...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Drove it 72km to work. lol Thank goodness it's Friday...

    Show off your campsite

Forgot this one. I was camping inside the CR-V on this occasion.

When does cost of a vehicle to build matter to you?

Yeah, I wish my CR-V had low range too. The cool thing is that the lowest two gears are actually extra-low, so they have more engine braking than the equivalent Civic, which is based on the same platform. It helps significantly, but low range would be preferable.

When does cost of a vehicle to build matter to you?

You bring up a good point. The phrase that comes to my mind as I read what you're writing is "diminishing returns." In my mind, I try to strike a balance between economy and diminishing returns. The thing about my particular vehicle is that it has a lot going for it in this department. The...
