    Come-along or winch?

I had what I think is a pretty wicked idea on how to add a winch to my V, and I credit this thread for getting me really thinking hard about it. I'm going to do my new coilovers and lift first, but as soon as I can after that, I'm going to try to get the winch put on.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Corrected the upward swoop that my roof rack originally had. It occurred to me that instead of redoing the foot with 3/4 instead of 1" aluminum tubing, I could just drill new holes for the side bracket. It now has an ever so slight downward bow, but way more level than it was before. I'm happy...

    Come-along or winch?

This thought occurred to me fairly early on. It is most certainly worth keeping in mind if one is about to deploy a come along for recovery. The curb weight on an RD1 CR-V is just over 3000lbs, the GVRW is just below 4000lbs I believe, so if I had an 8000lb come along, it should be rated for...

    Come-along or winch?

I do have some folding traction boards, and we did actually use them to get my buddy in his Taco unstuck when we were snow wheeling, but I do plan to invest in some maxtraxx style traction boards sometime in the near future. The $99 ones from Amazon seem to get good reviews, so I'll probably buy...

    Come-along or winch?

In answer to the last two posts, my CR-V is Realtime 4wd. Basically it's a similar arrangement to the full time 4wd system, except it's FWD until it encounters a 3% or greater difference between the front and rear wheels rotational speed, at which point it hydraulically engages a clutch pack in...

    Come-along or winch?

This is definitely an intriguing possibility. Have you personally made use of this sort of setup? If so, are there any major drawbacks you encountered?

    Come-along or winch?

So you're saying to mount the winch to a steel plate, and then attach it to the vehicle, then use something like jumper cable leads to hook it up to the battery, and away we go? Very interesting approach. I certainly hadn't thought of using a winch like that. What exactly is a synthetic choker...

    Come-along or winch?

I've done several trails so far where, had I pushed a little further and not made the wise choice (knowing I didn't have a winch or certain other recovery gear) I definitely would have needed one lol So ultimately I believe I can go places where I shouldn't without one, if that makes sense...

    Come-along or winch?

I doubt anyone makes a front hitch receiver for the CRV, so it would have to be custom, and at that point I might as well do the custom winch bumper I figure.

    Fake Overlanding?

That's a lot of bumps, I can attest ;) I'm very interested, because my wife really wants to get a travel trailer someday that can fit our family, and I would really like it if whatever trailer we eventually get can handle being taken to wild, remote places. I noticed that the lt17fq sleeps 6, so...

    Fake Overlanding?

Dang, you've taken that thing off roading? I had the impression that most travel trailers aren't built all that solid, but I guess the Coleman must be well built. The ground clearance does seem surprisingly high though. Hat's off to you for taking that deep into the wilds :D

What make and model of trailer?

Would love to see your setup. Sounds very interesting!

Don't worry, I can't afford to shop at the mall :P

    Define "Overlanding"

I often think it would be funny for me to start a youtube channel or something and call it Ghettoverlanding, because my setup is so ghetto it's not even funny. $1800 Craigslist beater pre 2000 honda, home built, kludged up kit, everything old or second hand lol I still have a lot of fun though...

    Define "Overlanding"

Your grandmother sounds awesome! :D Wish I had a grandmother like that. The way I see it, the term is merely a useful descriptor that helps us all understand what we mean when we talk about the activity we like, as distinct from camping, wheeling, etc. It isn't and it shouldn't be a strait...

    Come-along or winch?

Hello all, I've had an idea rolling around in my head, and I'd like to get some opinions from the OB community. As many of you may know, I do all my adventures on a shoestring budget. I am the sole breadwinner for a family with 5 kids living in one of, if not the most expensive parts of...

    Define "Overlanding"

I definitely subscribe to this philosophy. While I do take heavier gear than I would if I was backpacking, I don't take unnecessary gear or unnecessarily heavy or expensive gear. Case in point is my cot tent that cost me $50 and weighs about 25 lbs vs a roof top tent that costs $1000 and weighs...

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

Definitely officer discretion comes into play. For example, it's reasonable to bring 1 or 2, maaaybe 3 firearms in for the purpose of wilderness protection, especially depending on the size of the party travelling together, but bringing 10 or 20 for that reason is a bit excessive. Basically it...

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

It gets even crazier, I only gave the really basic explanation. Believe it or not, some courts in Canada have essentially ruled that the same act is both legal and illegal under different sections the same piece of law. If that's not perverse insanity, I don't know what is. In reference to the...
