I would say you have correctly identified your biggest issue with that tent.
I try to get away with the least amount of tent possible.
Also consider what it is going to take to clean and dry that thing after have to pack it up wet and muddy.
When you have kids (i.e. slave labor) which you...
There is a Tacoma forum with a great thread on this subject. Some of my favorite gems from there are as follows:
OVERLANDING and CAMPING = spending a lot of money to live like a hobo...
Overlanding is when you hate society so much that you spend all your money on a vehicle that can help you...
It is a Holset. I have no idea if stock or modified in some fashion.
Given the fact the truck is capable of laying down a destroyer class smoke screen I have no doubt there are some mods in there. Best guess is a #10 fuel plate and marine injectors, but that is just a guess.
If I nail the...
Put me down as another who appreciates the Hi-Lift for its versatility. However, I don't carry one on my Jeep. A bottle jack makes more sense for me. But then again, I don't much play in the mud.
Where I have most appreciated my Hi-Lift has been breaking beads on tires and pulling fence...
You are quite welcome.
And you have an accurate eye for local architecture.
If you get around to checking out the SoCal section of Overland Bound you will probably find that Clairemont could sustain a small chapter all on its own.
Welcome aboard.
Glad to hear it got sorted out.
Sorry I couldn't help, but travel got in the way.
Means of locating folks is a big topic. For those who have ham licenses and smart phones there is an APRS application that will show your location. I know a number of folks who use this app and it seems to work...
Stepping it up yet another notch:
The Cummins is a beast. The Suburban had to work at pulling the trailer when empty. The Cummins hardly cares. 5th gear at 60mph over the passes? No problem. EGT at 1,000 degrees, 20lbs of boost. Gimmee fuel...
And speaking of fuel, I think the Cummins...
NO!!
Not the "C" word!!
That is a downright dirty word.
Step one is to get past the idea that you have to make everything work with just one vehicle. This is why I have both the Jeep and the Suburban.
Lamentably, neither one is a diesel. (I hear you loud and clear on that subject.) I...
The spider gears you are looking for will come as part of the new carriers that will be required to go along with the larger axle shafts.
If you just want to install lunch box lockers (and thus avoid redoing the gear sets) then don't bother trying to change your axles. Just run the spline...
The Bride came across a statement somewhere, which I can't quote verbatim, but it was something along the lines of "Shared adversity builds strong relationships."
However, she has yet to express any gratitude at all for the trip where our tent wound up with a solid inch of standing water in it...
Well, now that you have narrowed it down that takes all the fun out of it.
I was going to say a time machine. Particularly one that collapses down to something no bigger than a briefcase.
I am still waiting for it to be developed. And I am certain it would be useful in any number of offroad...
I second the above, plus any kind of pulse braking on a curve on a surface with dicey traction is likely to be the last straw.
I learned to drive on a hard packed dirt road with sand on top of the hard pack. It wasn't that way by design, but that is what you would get during the dry season...
For me it is a matter of predictable versus unpredictable behavior.
It is as if the vehicle had two drivers, giving competing input into the equation. Sorry, but I would rather it was just me doing the driving. I don't need an electronic nanny.
I am happy that my '96 Cherokee does not have ABS. I have a '95 2wd that I will be converting to 4wd. It has ABS. When I get through with the conversion it will not have ABS.
I can't offer any help on the CB front, but for the ham bands you might also consider a Diamond NR770hb (or other variant of the NR770--it can be had in different finishes and different mounts). It offers 3.0 dBi of gain on 2M and 5.5 dBi of gain on 70cm. It is a radialless design (no ground...
Correct.
Don't be surprised if there are some complications in moving gears over from one carrier to another. New gears are generally preferred. You might end up with some noise.
