    Got some great news today!

Well that is a major bummer.

    Do you use your awning?

I bought an ARB awning about a year ago. It is still in the shipping tube waiting for me to fabricate a mounting system for it. Life happens. I still hold out hopes of relaxing beneath it.

    Best budget 4x4/SUV

Don't forget the need to carry a spare CPS and 3' worth of extensions so you can change it on the trail. I am also kind of partial to the XJ, and even have three of them myself.

    Tool Box Must Haves?

I have looked twice and I still don't see zip ties listed. You gotta have either zip ties or baling wire. And no one seems to have baling wire anymore. Most recent tool I found myself lacking was a magnetic pickup for retrieving a dropped nut. There will always be something you don't have.

    Best budget 4x4/SUV

While you are looking at Jeep Cherokees (XJ), don't rule out the Grand Cherokees (ZJ). The ZJs tend to go for less money (at least around here) and are not all that different from the XJs. The only major difference being that XJs have leaf spring rear suspension and ZJs have coil spring rear...

Split Wire Harness Protection Tubing: Do you use it as a overlay for your vehicles lighting project?

I can't imagine not using something to protect the wiring. I use either corrugated split loom or the mesh type, depending on what the vehicle already has in place. I try to make everything look as if it were OEM.

1998 Jeep ZJ, Questions on parts and vehicle info

With regard to Hanson, I have no direct experience with them, but I can tell you that they have been around for awhile. They are no Johnny come lately, here today, gone tomorrow operation. If delivery times are an issue, call them first and ask upfront what you should expect in terms of...

The 2020 Jeep Gladiator is Ready to Rumble

My '96 XJ is at 175K miles or so. I regard it as a reliable vehicle. In the time I have owned it (5 yrs or so) I have had a coil go out, an alternator die, a wire short out against the header and the clutch line spring a leak on account of heat from the header (both of those last two could be...

Trailer Hitch Stabilizer: Do you use one on your Trailer?

I run a friction type sway control along with my weight distribution hitch on my flatbed and my cargo hauler, but those are both large, tandems. I have never noticed any kind of sway control on small trailers. I too would be interested to hear from folks who have run them.

    choosing the right winch ?

In my opinion a Warn M12000 would be about right for that rig. I know it is not twice the weight, and yes they do make an M14000, but I think the M12000 would be adequate.

    Trash is trash is trash...right?

I would not recommend this course of action, particularly if you want to be part of a respected community. I don't understand why people have put those things there, but they represent a tradition to a number of people, and those people would certainly take offense. I think their offense at...

    Trash is trash is trash...right?

Umm... Don't go doing that in Moab. Stacked rocks are known as "cairns". They are the markers for the trails so that folks don't wander off and damage the landscape. Many trails in Moab would be next to impossible to find without the cairns. If you were to remove those markers you would be...

what do you carry your tools in? (ideas and pictures)

I would suggest you consider a larger perspective than this. I came across someone who was very much in your shoes three days ago. Stuck at the side of the road with a flat tire and no abilities of his own with which to deal with it. I could have easily helped him. I had a truck and trailer...

    Bottle Jack

Bottle jack is my standard go-to for changing tires off road. That is what I carry in my Jeep, and I have used it for changing tires on other folks' rigs. They are simple, reliable and versatile. I have no feedback on Torin though. Mine are old jacks that I picked up at garage sales/swap...

    How Tall Are You?

My work truck has a lumber rack on it that makes for challenges with parking structures. I have the height printed and attached on the inside of the ash tray so I can remind myself when the question comes up. I need to do that for the XJ and the Suburban.

    Camping with kids

Best description of that contrast that I have seen goes like this: A girl will look at a situation and think "I might get hurt" and not proceed. A boy will look at the same situation and think "I might not get hurt" and proceed. All the exact same words, just a slight rearrangement. And it...

    OB Approved Chain Saws

Awesome. I expected that was all custom work. I hate to think what the price tag comes to. I am impressed with starting up at -36* with no issues. My 12V Cummins doesn't appreciate it when I try to start it in the teens (positive). I suspect it would not start at all at -36* without having...

    OB Approved Chain Saws

That is too cool. Diesel Porsche overlanding rig! Where is your build thread? And is there any aftermarket support for that at all?

    Camping with kids

Amen!! There are way too many people who have no clue what to do within the confines of their own mind. The need to be endlessly entertained is a problem. The world would be a better place if more people would simply SEE the world around them and then THINK about it. For themselves...
