I think you need to do a little more research. There are a TON of very capable American made off-road trailers. Mine is by SoCal Teardrops:
It sits on 35" tires and has a TON of clearance underneath, and everything underneath is skid-plated. It also uses a Max Coupler fully articulating...
It sounds like you need a trailer. It's a big cost, but you already have an awesome truck for towing it (the previous owner of my trailer had a diesel Colorado and he said it was fantastic with the trailer). The trailer thing is a slippery-slope, and before long you find yourself looking at...
Wow... all I can say is wow! TDi, SAS 4-door Dakota, awesome. Really looking forward to seeing how it all works. Any plans to tow with it? I wonder if a TDi would push my WJ around well with my ~2800lbs trailer?

"Someday", sure. Just like we no longer need to ask "is it practical to daily drive an EV" anymore. But for now, it's a very relevant questions. Range anxiety sucks... range anxiety REALLY sucks if you're miles and miles off-grid in an EV.

What do you consider serious? If it's more than a newer Taco with the optional rear locker will do, then I'd say a proper Jeep is the way to go. ZR2 Colorado with it's front and rear lockers will do more than a rear-locker-only Taco... but not a *ton* more. So that'd have you looking at...
I finally got my first major trip in with the WJ and trailer. I guess Moonrocks was relatively major (150 miles each way, going over Donner Summit both ways) but this trip was much, much longer. I went from home in Lincoln, CA to the family property way out in the Payette National Forrest, ID...
I got the WJ around 92k miles, though we originally bought it for my wife's younger brother when he turned 16 as a daily. We got it back (we helped him buy a new car) around 104k I think it was. It's only at 111k now, I need to use it more. My truck I don't remember exactly, but less than 10...
We had a '19 RAM with the traditional suspension (we specifically ordered it that way, we didn't much care for the air on our '16 JGC and didn't use the different heights much, or at all) which we leveled and cleared 35"s nicely.
This is one of the only pics I have handy:
Those are...
I finally took the WJ out for a weekend with the trailer. It was certainly an unconventional, somewhat unplanned trip - and not what I'd really consider "Overlanding."
Originally, I had plans to head out into Lassen National Park with a buddy, and hopefully be far away from crowds and chaos...
Yeah, my Heep has the go-to-tweeners: Patagonia M/Ts. So far I'm really impressed, and they're smooth/quiet on the freeway if you run 32+ PSI so they crown out and run on the center treads mostly (which they're designed to do).

Well, I was commenting in @JimBill's thread, and realized I should post details about my roof rack here too. We used these: 99-04 Grand Cherokee (WJ) Roof Rail Light Mounting Tabs #WJLB4 welded directly to my roof rack (which we sectioned and sleeved to narrow it about an inch and tuck it down...
Glad to hear your most recent cooling mods, flipping duties, did the trick (at least so far). Also, the rig is looking great in that pic!. For the roof rack issue, we used these: 99-04 Grand Cherokee (WJ) Roof Rail Light Mounting Tabs #WJLB4 welded directly to my roof rack (which we sectioned...
Great review. I had AT/IIs on my truck before and always liked them, but went to M/Ts in general. I miss the smoothness and quieter ride of the ATs at time.
