We didn't have any trouble finding a place to camp in the Kaibab National Forest. The lower part of those forest service roads would accomodate a Class A RV, but if you keep going and take off on a side road it becomes a road less traveled and you can find some nice secluded areas.
BTW, it is...
There is a fine line to be walked there.
The FEMA type officials, once they show up, are going to regard good Samaritans as somewhat less than welcome. OTOH, many of the rank and file who have boots on the ground are going to be happy to see helpful resources. Walking that line is a...
I am sure you will find there are a number of folks here who are very like-minded. I was CERT up until a couple of years ago.
Independence/self-reliance go hand in hand with being able to get out of interesting scrapes. And only once you are able to take care of yourself are you really...
I take The Varmints with me. They have no choice. They don't meet many of the aforementioned criteria, but OTOH, I can't just leave them alone at home, so I guess I have no choice either. Perhaps after the last one turns 18 and I boot him out of the house I will take the dog. He is less...
I have found that using LED lanterns draws in far fewer mosquitos than using Coleman lanterns. Part of this is due to the color temperature of the light, but another part of this is due to the CO2 emitted by the Coleman lanterns, but not by the LED lanterns. It might be worth it to try doing...
That has been my experience with them.
Whoop-de-dos on an incline were a PITA with my old Suburban. There was a steep "road" (more cow trail than road) that made a nice short-cut home, but it always made me wish for fuel injection. An EMP is about the only thing that could make me want to go...
My solution to "Are we there yet?" was to hand them a paper map and make them find both our location and the destination. Not optional. Must find both on the map. Then they can answer their own question. That put a quick end to that problem.
You should be just fine. 43 years in the desert and plenty of experience finding the limits of your rig? I would rather be on the trail with you than with a newbie with a JK/JL/Tacoma.
I bought my XJ with the front driveshaft in the rear cargo area because that was the only place it fit after...
The Varmints are a big part of why I camp. Get them out of the house so they can break mother nature instead.
Varmint #1 is getting to the point I maybe shouldn't call him a kid anymore. He is almost as tall as me, and possibly eats more.
But all three of them still love to take off...
I am all for the development of new gear and rigs. The fact that even the automakers are catering to us suggests it will be a while before this becomes history.
I figure it will peak about the time Cadillac and Lincoln get on board.
If you step back away from the trees and take a look at the forest, overlanding has been elite ever since the Turtle Expedition and that other site.
This site has a lot to do with not being so elitist.
What has really happened to overlanding is that it has gone mainstream. And that has a lot...
I love it when someone comes up with an out of the box idea. It may not solve any real issues, but it shows that at least someone is thinking. Heaven knows there is a shortage of that in this world. And it might actually lead to something pretty cool.
Go for it.
Publishing routes and coordinates is just asking for hordes. Far better to share that information back-channel so it isn't all over every search engine.
One of the groups I wheel with is largely comprised of LEOs and retired LEOs. They tend to travel armed. I know it is not everyone's cup of tea, but this story underscores the merits of being in a group and being able to defend yourself.
