Me, I am waiting for Elon to announce the new Tesla personal space ship so I can go explore the moon and beyond. Then I will rank myself among the elite.
Lots of good points.
Most of all I like the reliability of an axe. Moving parts and fluids introduce all kinds of failure modes, many of which are difficult to overcome without substantially more resources than are needed to maintain an axe.
I have used an axe quite a number of times clearing fallen trees for Adopt-A-Trail in the San Bernardino National Forest. Chainsaws are not allowed unless you go through their several day training course.
It helps if you are good with an axe. Not everyone is.
Where are all the jerky recipes?
If there is any food that belongs in the recipe section of an overlanding forum, jerky has got to be in the top 5. Yet a search only finds me this: South African version of jerky sausage
This just won't do.
Here is my favorite, courtesy of "Fred", an old...
This is not exactly what I think of as "overlanding food", but Lanlubber requested it, so here it is.
Rainwater's is long gone now, but they were an excellent steakhouse in downtown San Diego a few decades back. This is their creamed corn recipe. Given that the recipe was available when they...
There is a group I wheel with which is very ham radio focused and they have much of this down pat.
The biggest issue for them is that everyone have a true dual band radio. This is a big deal because they have one channel for chit-chat (i.e. trading insults) and a separate channel for the...
The San Bernardino National Forest has some great trails.
If it were me I would take a loop of Cleghorn and the 2N49. Cleghorn should be no problem IF you stay off the bypasses. The bypasses are where all the gnarly stuff is. Some of the bypasses are easy, but others are absolutely not for...
Thank you.
Hopefully it is just rings seating in. Takes a few hundred miles to accomplish that. This trip certainly should have helped.
I know I am missing out on a bunch of things with the choices I am currently making, but I also know that what I am doing is an investment in the future...
That looks like it was a beautiful trip.
What was the structure with the carved stone and brick archway? (number 23)
How is the new motor?
One of these days I am going to manage to make it on your trips. Right now I am absolutely buried in projects that I can't take time away from.
What if some people don't like the outdoors?
I know The Bride is one very reluctant camper.
Who are we to impose our values on them?
This has the potential to be rather presumptuous.
Schaefer is two way.
I have gone down and up it, and have passed vehicles going the opposite direction each time. It is not a narrow road at all (though it does scare the flat-landers out of their wits). As with any trail you need to pay attention for oncoming traffic and be willing to move...
But, but, but...
Diesel!!
I want either an older, mechanical Benz or one of those new Cummins 2.8 conversions. I think the Benz is what I most want, but it is probably also the more difficult conversion.
The extended range of a diesel conversion is what I want most of all.
