CA - Finding the eastern end of the Hungaleti Ridge Trail

To start, I should mention that this system of trails has multiple names. Depending on the source it may be called the Pardoe Trail, Carson Emigrant Trail, Squaw Ridge Trail, or Hungaleti Ridge Trail and may be marked as 17E24 or 16E26. A couple of the trails were closed for several years as...

    SOLD Delete

Thanks for the details. I think my last question is how badly do you want fancy race shocks? :) The Overland Journal podcasts has several episodes where they discuss the idea of "need" vs "want", especially when applied to suspensions. Based on your description it doesn't sound like you need...

    SOLD Delete

How much high speed driving (for extended amounts of time) are you planning to do on rough roads? Do you need the extra fluid capacity and adjustability of the higher stage kits? What limitations have you run into with the stock suspension on your Tacoma? What tire size are you planning to run?

    Auxiliary power set up

Thanks, it's just 8awg wire with braided sleeving on it and heat shrink on the ends.

    Auxiliary power set up

The picture above shows my old method for installing the breaker. I've since switched to a piece of delrin and a length of aluminum channel so that the delrin is held down by the battery clamp and can't move around.

    Auxiliary power set up

If some of the accessories already have inline fuses then there isn't much point in double fusing them, and in fact it would make it more complicated to diagnose a loss of power. If you want all your fuses in a centralized place you could cut off the inline fuses and run those accessories off...

    Miles per gallon lost

My lifted 3rd gen 4Runner can get 19-20 mpg on the freeway (18.5 gallon tank). My lifted 2nd gen Tacoma can get 17-19mpg on the freeway (21 gallon tank). Anything that adds weight (especially rotational), or puts the engine out of its target rev band (larger tires), or increases wind resistance...

Who is a Wilderness EMT, Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Aid certified?

I've taken Wilderness First Aid courses from both the Red Cross and NOLS, which reminds me that I should sign up for a refresher course. I'd love to get a WFR certification but have a hard time justifying that much time off of work. In contrast, the WFA class is only 2 days and I highly...

Temp Forest Closures for all of CA

I was going to camp in the Stanislaus this weekend, but decided not to due to the bad air quality. Might go next weekend instead. The forest closure document from Sept 19 states the following: Based on the above it seems that dispersed camping is allowed in zone C (map of the zones). Check...

    Death of the “Coleman” Lantern?

Growing up we always used a white gas lantern which you had to pump up before lighting. I have still never seen a lantern that put out more light than that style does. The downsides are that white gas is getting harder to find, and they can light on fire if used improperly or if the seals go...

US West Explore Onion Valley 16E26

There are several different trails in that area that you can connect together. - Long Valley Trail - Hungaletti / Squaw Ridge - Pardoe Trail There are also a couple different routes that you can take down to Mud Lake. Some of these roads were opened (or re-opened) to trucks in the last few...

US West Explore Onion Valley 16E26

Are you planning to head east towards the Long Valley and Hungaletti Ridge Trails? If so, that's a great area to explore. I was up there earlier this summer, the section east of 38.63182, -120.05880 gets pretty rocky.

Large Bags - Duffel or Similar for Roof Rack Use

Outdoor Gear Lab has a good review of duffel bags that may help. https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/topics/travel/best-duffel-bag Rhino Rack has a series of bags designed to go on the roof. https://www.rhinorack.com/en-us/products/roof/luggage-bags/luggage-bags As does Frontrunner, but I think...

    Overlanding suspension?

Fair enough, though I'm curious what part of my post you disagree with?

    Overlanding suspension?

I'm not sure "making due with what you have" is fair statement here. There are many people who could afford to buy all the big $$ gear for their trucks, and choose not to for various reasons. If someone wants to spend the money on a top end suspension then great, that's their prerogative. I...

    Snow camping

Fortunately no shovels were required for the above photos. On skiing and winter offroading trips I usually bring along a collapsible shovel. I don't think the one I have is still in production, but it's similar to https://www.amazon.com/Navaris-Aluminum-Utility-Snow-Shovel. I also carry a small...
