The military had every manufacturer involved in prototyping the HMMWV, they took all the prototypes and took what worked best and told them all to go back and build V2 prototypes, from this the lowest bidder was selected (AM General). The system is identical minus the portals... the portals...
The best features of the overhead is the ability to stash my go to items, a place for maps, I also loved my stereo and my CB up there. Near future upgrade to the console will be adding a couple of power ports for charging devices that I store up there.

The problem with Lodge CI is something to do with the final stages of prep work before being pre-seasoned... I have found that if I take a flap wheel and knock the factory finish down until almost smooth then start the seasoning process I can almost match that of my Griswold.
I guess I just take for granite that I went through the commo classes back in 2000 when the SINGAR was getting a complete update. Also the manual you referenced was written prior to 1999, just got declassified this year because the military has gone to other means of encryption and deception...
The funny thing is... my winch has only been used 3 times for recovery... but used every trip for trail maintenance.... the snatch block helps change the direction of pull... wich I do a lot...
My point is that you can’t say the cost of GMRS is cheap compared to ham for the license... for a family of 4 getting licensed on ham is $90 for a lifetime... 10 years later the GMRS is another $70, 20 years later another 70, etc etc... so if you are only going to need the license for 10 years...
