    SPOT Gen 3

I've had 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation SPOTs. I deactivated my service about a year ago because the company kept upping annual rates with no warning other than when I opened my bank account and saw a 280 dollar charge on my account, when I first started using the service it was under 200...

    Stearing Column Holsters

I took a standard Bladetech holster, took the belt mount off of it and screwed it to the center console. On a little hatchback I had I screwed it under the steering column. I used a Bladetech "Revolution" holster for this purpose. I still need to decide where to mount it on this XJ I have...

What's your latest camping gear purchase, and what caused you to buy it?

He did a bang up job of keeping it contained and not letting it develop into a full on wildland fire. He must have been a wildland firefighter in a previous life :D

    Another HAM vs GMRS question

Not really practicable with the equipment required to setup a repeater. You could get a radios that do crossbanding but that's beyond the scope of GMRS operations.

    Another HAM vs GMRS question

Motorola or Kenwood surplus commercial radios. You can get them for under 100 dollars and they're built like tanks. Downside is they aren't turnkey. They'll require programming. Many of the sellers on EBAY will program them for you when you order them or you can order up the cables and find...

    Another HAM vs GMRS question

If you plan on expanding your GMRS use to more than just vehicle to vehicle trail comms (repeaters for exampel) be aware that currently all the MXT radios will NOT do split tones or go wideband. They're all stuck in Narrowband mode.

    GMRS Radio!

The antenna is the heart of any radio setup.

    Tundra comms..

It was a LOS contact. I was at 8500 feet talking out over the SOCAL desert the receiving station altitude was less than 200 feet. IIRC when I punched that into a LOS calculator 98 miles was just under the max LOS distance of like 110 or something like that.

    Jeep Owners Represent!

    Tundra comms..

While it's possible I don't think planting the idea in the heads of new users/operators that they're going to easily and routinely get long range simplex contacts is a good idea. It gives them an IMO unrealistic idea of what "normal" VHF/UHF operations are going to be like. Contrary to what...

    Led lights suck

I did a full exterior LED swap on my XJ right after I bought it. The LED taillight/brakelight when the parking lights were on would flash the brake lights when one of the blinkers were on. Weird. with some trouble shooting I found the brake light/taillight LEDs were the issue so kept the LED...

    Tundra comms..

That's not a common range, for most people's operations. I have made a simplex contact of 98 miles from a 8500 foot ridgeline out over the socal desert. That was using a 5 watt handheld. That's the exception to the rule and requires really good conditions.

    Ham Radio License

You can brain dump all that info afterwards. Helps to retain some of the antenna info but all of the info I use today I self taught via lots of googling before ever taking the test. The test was just to get the tech license. It's not a hobby for me it's a tool but I want to have somewhat of...

HUGO TO DURANT LEG OF THE OKLAHOMA ADVENTURE TRAIL (OAT)

In contrast with the large fancy cemetery at the start of this thread I stopped by this little sparsely populated cemetery I just happened to come across. The newest grave site I found in here was 2013. Being born was a dangerous profession in the 18 and 1900s. Lots of gravestones in this one...

HUGO TO DURANT LEG OF THE OKLAHOMA ADVENTURE TRAIL (OAT)

A while on down the road I stumbled across this wood working shop that had "free kindling" out front. I grabbed a few pieces and tossed it in the Jeep. The shop was closed. Not too much further down the road I came across "Muddy Boggy Creek". This would be a river where I came from haha...

HUGO TO DURANT LEG OF THE OKLAHOMA ADVENTURE TRAIL (OAT)

I've ran a few of the sections on the south east corner mainly from Talihena south to Hugo. Got a weekend free and clear of the wife and kids (though my daughter usually goes on stuff like this with me) so decided to go knock out another leg of it since it wouldn't take more than a day trip to...

    Escondido Draw

^^^x2 I get the draw if you have a SxS or are into doing nothing but off roading. I want to get away from everyone not be contained in a park with them. The few times I've been to Barnwell I've enjoyed the visit as far as wheeling goes but the crowds are just annoying.

Baofeng uv5r with 50watt amp? GMRS

The space occupied by a Handheld and amp combined with the extra coax running between the two is going to be fiddly and take up as much space or more than a good mobile unit. You can get a solid commercial surplus radio you can use on GMRS for less than the cost of the amp alone
