...start the build? That thing is already trice the beast anything Jeep makes today!

    Orienteering by hand?

Unfair? Naw. No offense taken. I am no expert by any means, but I think I have the Fundamentals. My father was back from Nam and taught us a bunch of that stuff in the 1970's. In '80, we moved from greater Boston up to the Adirondacks in upstate NY. By then I was 10. We hiked, hunted a little...

What should be the first mod

I'm probably parroting what others have said but: If it's new to you, drive it around town getting used to where I the controls are so you can feel out any tactile buttons or dials without having to look. Get a feel for the vehicle and its ride qualities. Vehicle-specific tools Obviously...

    Orienteering by hand?

Funny. I was just working with 4 different compass models across 3 brands and doing some map work with them at the kitchen table, just as a comparison of thier features. I dont have the Brunton 20, but I recently bought the Brunton TruArc 15. I like the idea of a quality US made compass, so I...

    Orienteering by hand?

I am not a beginner, per se, but I can see he's very good for taking an ABSOLUTE beginner and making them comfortable. Not using the technical terms, and such and going over the very basics forst. Not knowing him, and just based on his videos, he would probably also be a good teacher of little kids

2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Build

Very nice work! I have a 99 myself, but not near as detailed as this build. That rear wishbone is a well known point of issue. Nice job

What is your preferred shelter? (Rooftop Tent vs Ground Tent vs Etc...)

I dont drive my WJ as much as I used to. Ut when I did we used a 3 person ground tent. I dont think a 3 person ground tent with just 2 poles takes very long to set up. Breakdown might be a little longer, because of the need to sweep it out as I pack. When I'm with the little lady, she wants a...

Electric Winch. Are they necessary for overlanding/touring?

Because, priorities! So, only do HALF of those broverlander mods. Leave plenty of room

Overlanding is: "Vehicle Dependent Travel". Nothing else. We will not further define "overlanding".

To your point about quarterbacks...Tom Brady was once second string to Drew Bledsoe, so you can ask a JV for a training regimen, just take it with a grain of salt and juxtapose it against what you are seeing. If someone asks do they need a winch at x trail, and a person without a winch answers...

Overlanding is: "Vehicle Dependent Travel". Nothing else. We will not further define "overlanding".

Thank you for saying so, Grub. I've just finished reading the whole thread and I've seen a number of posts I think are better. If you think that was worth a dollar and not 2 cents, you should see me getting up to walk to the swear jar at work, while simultaneously pulling a fiver out of my...

Overlanding is: "Vehicle Dependent Travel". Nothing else. We will not further define "overlanding".

Right on. By the way, what if I were independently wealthy (I'm not) and wanted to get into this? Theres equipment and theres experience. I can get half of that equation out of the way in a month, fully understanding it will take years to get the other part...should I not buy the best I can to...

Overlanding is: "Vehicle Dependent Travel". Nothing else. We will not further define "overlanding".

In an earlier post, you decried segregation based on vehicle type. Now you want segregation based on experience. Should I have to have filled out a questionnaire and relate my life experience into a SQL database before being sorted and allowed to join? Dont respond to the question if you dont...

That's been one of my issues with Jeep these last 15 years or so. Dude, Jeep used to MEAN offroad capable vehicle. Trail rated -?! That's what Jeep MEANT. Now things are softened to the point they have to indicate WHICH Jeeps are the good ones. However, my brother in law has a new Gladiator...

Sorry. I just hooked into this post today and saw that it was created yesterday and has already ballooned to 7 pages. You're on fire and sparked conversation. So that's good.

I think it is up to whoever decides to engage this open ended, broad question, guide the discussion to narrow it down a little if the person asking the question doesnt know enough to narrow it down themselves. Some newer or younger people might not even understand the tire size system and how...

Please accept my opinion here respectfully, as thats how it is intended. I agree with some points listed, and not with others. I agree with @Shakes355 , although for some reason I didnt see his post prior to your quoting it. Yes, OP, a person asking a question should inject some context into...

do you skip 3/8 drive sockets?

Yeah. The axle nut for my 99 Grand Cherokee is 36mm, 35 for my Sierra. The rear shock absorber nuts on my 14 Sierra are 21 mm and the lugs are 22mm. All much easier with a half inch drive. Oh yeah, and the serpentine drive belt tensioner on the GC? Half in. So insert your breaker bar without a...

Nice. Classic sleeper. Looks stock but not quite stock. Nice way to go
