I'm a little lost, maybe for not having been to Baker County. But wouldnt you want Baker County Sheriff to be the first ones to respond? I would think that's just who you were aiming for. How is reaching out on a radio any better than that? I mean that as a real question. What took 4 hours, I...
Of those in your list I would vote for a Subaru Forester first. Excellent AWD, very "grippy" and excellent lines of sight. Great visibility. Good amount of cargo space. 8.9 inches ground clearance in 2013 model.
An 05 to 12 Toyota Rav 4 is also a good choice, very reliable - more so than the...
It definitely depends on your system. Clearly a Subaru is AWD all the time. A newer GMC or Chevy truck with 4x4 has a dial which includes an Auto setting. This is essentially AWD, however, you should not run in Auto in a GM truck as a regular practice. The 4x4 clutch packs wear out faster than...
It's tough to find taller but narrow A/T tires. Depending on lift, taller but narrow might work.
Personally I think you made the right decision. If you are rubbing while braking, or at full turn, imagine what it would be like on a trail.
I have an old Jeep Grand Cherokee that I lifted 2...
Yep. I was there last week of may as well and concur with @TOUGE 's statement completely. Sun then rain then snow. And no way can you go off road. No way.
On a trip Boston to Florida and back, within the past 2 years, there was a backup on the highway. Previous to that but on the same trip, I had been routed and rerouted, in some of the most ridiculous ways, seemingly just to shave a single minute off the arrival time. Sometimes I was routed in...
Burned out my yd1022 chip in my Cobra 29 ltd classic during this last big trip, as we were headed through Nebraska outrunning some real nasty weather. Started smelling and smoking. So I unplugged it and when I pulled over for coffee I swapped it out with my older 25 wx, which worked fine the...
Or the Gallatin river if you take i80 west to Rock Springs and turn north on the 191. I saw lots of kayakers even back in late May and the Gallatin is famous for fishing as well. Theres a few quiet
or shallow spots for the dog
Check out the thread on Mid Maine. They say that all the logging trucks uo there use CB. So if you are ever heading up there, I guess dont ditch the CB
51 years in New England and I agree. Dont run bald tires. And 4x4 does work better on a snowy or icy street as well. It may stop you a car-lengrh or so sooner. Sometimes that's just enough.
To @Trail_pilot 's point though, everyone is so busy "driving too fast for conditions" that 4x4 often...
I am half in, and half out of this camp. I went this past May, last month, just before labor day. Although May is not the busiest month, it turned out to be the busiest May on record. Yes there was traffic. Yes there were a lot of people. But you shouldn't be just trying to whip through. Take...
Todays 4x4 is different than older 4x4, at least for a lot of makers. If I understand correctly it is more of a clutch-pack now, at least in GM trucks, which is what allows the auto-4x4 mode. It is technically weaker but also more versitile.
I have found that engaging 4hi on simple wet pavement...
Looks like you have a great trip planned! Enjoy!
Ok, this is exactly the kind of trip we did last month, although we had mostly different destinations. We started from Boston and did 5,742 miles in just two weeks. As a result, we only skimmed over a lot of places where I wish we could have...
