    Question for long haulers

About a weeks worth of everything, but I assume I am going to get wet, dusty or muddy at some point. I find after 4 or so days you need a short day and rest, it is a good time to clean everything. The other thing to consider if you need to stop for fuel at 4 or 5 days using a coin laundry if...

What not to do with a brand new 4Runner

Good Job, but man even from that pic it looks like a pretty iffy route.

    Orienteering by hand?

@ThundahBeagle this will not make you feel any better but my 40+ year old Silva I found on exercise in Wainwright Alberta 40 odd years a go just developed a bubble, this last year. But it has been bounced around in trucks for most of that 40 years. But the bubble should vanish at warmer temps

Our, And Your, Opinions On Some Popular Overlanding Gear

I would like to comment the video was excellent it explained very clearly in most cases why they feel they gear is a waste of time. Like many I have a Hi-lift, awning and RTT, my reason for each choice were informed and made after many years of travel. But how many new comers do you see who...

Our, And Your, Opinions On Some Popular Overlanding Gear

@Clrussell Well I am from eastern Canada originally and you can not swing a cat without hitting a Gallant and Richard is a pretty common 1st name . I do not which Dmax you are referring to but if it is engines not me I am long time IT/programmer. Funny story though a long time when I was young...

Our, And Your, Opinions On Some Popular Overlanding Gear

Good video, I commented re the Hi-lift but your points were excellent 90 odd % of the ones I see have never been used. I disagree on having the RTT, but that is personal choice your points were all very valid and should be considerations before purchase, especially the weight issue. I looked...

The reason why a VHF radio and knowledge of your logging road frequencies could be important

The trucks shown below used to be a pretty regular sight on Vancouver island, they are in less use now but they are still out there. I do not know if trucks this large travel anywhere else on resource roads but monitoring the road frequencies on active a haul routes is always a good idea. And...

    Camp Photos!

Out for a shakedown run this weekend up the East side of Harrison lake. A little 1 truck spot just at the edge of bridge over the "creek" All you could hear was the roar of Shovel Creek, I had water on 2 sides, although the other side was literally just a little forest stream

    Any other wheelchair outlanders?

I am generally interested I hope this thread has some good discussion. I can not see any good reason why someone in a wheel chair and properly setup vehicle could not overland. The only direct limitations I can think of would be campsite selection, shelter and of course vehicle setup. A basic...

What your thoughts on a cable winch puller

@Billiebob @jschmidt the Tifor needs steel cable, it is something about how it works. The power puller mentioned by @Shakes355 can be either so it is a good choice. Any manual winch even a hi-lift can be used to get you unstuck, as long as you are not buried to the axles. As noted it is very...

Simple Mistake, and hopefully some good advice.

Your center locker should have gotten you through I would have thought. I have the same setup on my Discovery, CDL and open on both ends. Do you have any form of traction control ?

    New Overlander looking for advice

Crush everything cans in particular if you can. Grease and grey water can be a problem, but I keep to can a large on for grey water and small on for grease. Cans get filled and go on edge of the fire to boil off. No fire then grey water gets boiled off on the stove, grease gets wiped up with...

Bit of a bad bad line too maybe would you have been better off more to the right, looks like you could have kept that wheel on the ground.

    Fitting a GPS to a Kenwood 710a

Small update put it all in the Disco and went for a short drive, works good. The mount needs work, better system for rough trails. A couple of images, I will do a final update once everything is "locked" in place.

    Fitting a GPS to a Kenwood 710a

Here is the final cable setup, the most difficult part was figuring out what cable went to what pin on the keyboard extension cable, there is no standard to the color/pin mapping. Once that was determined and tested final wiring was completed. I use R/C wiring to create the connections so it...

    Overlanding with Anxiety

@ExpeditionArizona I had a random thought, based on your comment above. You might want to have take look at the Rebelle Rally info & Website. She might find it interesting or inspiring, it is a woman only off road rally. They work hard at it and need a complete skill set. I would suggest...

    Fitting a GPS to a Kenwood 710a

I thought I would add my solution here for anyone who may need to do this. There are a number of posts on how to add a GPS internally , but I preferred not to open my radio head up. There is more to come on this once I get my keyboard cable I used an ancient Garmin Etrex Venture that finally...

    Overlanding with Anxiety

It can be difficult, some people can not get past certain things, my wife is unable to drive on hiways due to anxiety. She can manage around town or if I am driving. All the suggestions here are good, and you are starting out well. But particularly discuss what she is most anxious about...
