Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
So, I guess I should be happy with 5 years, call it done and replace with the same. After a lot of research that’s what I’ve done. As all of the upright models are manufactured the same way there is no variance in quality. . Hang it, quick connect the water lines, spin on the propane line- get...
My personal preference would be the 60 series. Yup, it has an underpowered engine, but who’s in a hurry. It also has a solid front axle. It will be a lot easier to wrench on and a lot easier to modify to your liking. It’s also way up there on the cool factor. And, the 60 will increase in value...
Not a failure at all. You had a great time exploring a great state nestled in the Appalachian mountains. You had a learning experience. Lessons? You know what those are, you’ve outlined them. We take really long trips two & three times a year, before each trip not only do I thoroughly...
About 5 years ago we took the plunge and bought an inline camp life ( brand?) water heater. My mounted pump sucks water from a dedicated shower tank, pumps it to the heater, then hot water for the shower, using propane from a regular 2.5 gallon propane tank. The heater would be fine, cept for...
Not normal at all. I used to run BFG K0 tires. Easily get 50,000 miles out of a set of 4, legally sell them used and the new owner would get another 10-15k miles out of them. Like you, our tires are used on about 70% pavement; 20% gravel or dirt and 10% rocky technical rough stuff. I also have...
Tires: that’s it. Dealerships will do everything they can to void a warranty because of customer add on & modifications. Way back when, I used to pull the front driveshaft on my rubicon with every oil change, inspect and lube up the centering thing the best I could without zerks using a needle...
I’m watching this thread as we will be along with two other vehicles, leaving Pennsylvania July 1st. That is great advice- 2 spares? Hmmm, I’m gonna think on that a bit. What do you think of one mounted and the other a carcass?
A friend of mine is going to hike up Mnt Washington for his birthday. I’m not familiar with the area. He will be car camping. What’s a good campground for him to set up a Basecamp? Thanks!
Interesting: all this talk of never going out alone. That’s all my wife and I did for a couple of decades. Out alone, with paper maps, and our backpacks, just in case we had to walk away. About 10 years ago we started carrying a PLB. Just last year I finally dumped the CB radio for a GMRS...
Guale #2 is one of the reasons we now have a roof top tent on our trailer. We were there many years ago. It was windy, as it usually is , and we could not pitch our tent. Impossible to drive a stake. We had a quick dinner, and shoved off. I want to go back and spend a few nights there. It is...
Agreed! I was a user of BFGs since the late 70s and like BFG.dnews never had a tire failure. Big time loyal customer. Then; my tire guy (very small independent shop) dared me to try out the Grabber ATXs 285/75/16: The first set lasted 55,000 miles and still had another 10,000 miles of...
Starting over? Whoa- not easy to answer. Our 80series/LX450 is one darn nice truck. I’d be tempted to do it all again if I were 10 years younger. Reality sets in once in a while and I realize I’m soon going to be 70 years young, my darlin is right behind me at 67- I think we’d find an LX470...
Hmmm, I find the opposite to be true. Overlanding invigorates my body, spirit & mind. Otherwise my wife & I would not be in a constant state of either overlanding ( which we do part time 10-12 weeks out per year ) or planning our next trips. However, there are times when we are out that we...
I agree, I followed behind a trailer with independent suspension. All of the articulation happens at the hitch. The entire trailer articulates, just as my solid axle trailer articulates at the hitch. I’d love to see a film or a lecture on physics that would prove me wrong because I do enjoy...
10 years ago we purchased a Trasharoo. The bag lived on the tire of our garage queen which is used for about 14,000 miles of travels per year. So it endured about 3 months of full exposure to the elements per year. One of the seams near a strap up top has dry rotted . Bummer, I asked my...
Very true, never bothered with hand held either. It took me a couple years to stop being pig headed and send the old Cobra into the landfill and switch to GMRS. Mines pretty ordinary with a weak antenna and still gets out 20 miles or so.
