Winter Coast to Coast Trail?

  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

Hey guys, looking to tap into some of your group knowledge. This info might be out there already, but I haven't been able to find it, so I thought I'd ask.

I recently ran across the Trans American Trail, and absolutely LOVE the idea of traversing our great country from coast to coast via backroads/trails. I own a landscape maintenance company, and do not offer snow removal, so I have my winters available for adventuring, which I know isn't ideal, but maybe I can still make something work. I did some research on the TAT, and have realized that it probably is too intense of a trail to traverse during winter, especially as a solo traveler. Not to mention, it sounds like some sections are too narrow for more than a side by side.

Does anyone know of a route that would be be mostly passable during winter.

I am still debating what rig I would do this trip in, but it would be some sort of a 4x4 with low range, rear locker/front LSD, and a winch (probably receiver hitch mounted so I could pull form both the front and back for self recovery. I'll have on board air, so airing down wouldn't be a problem. Also I'd take tire chains for hard pack snow and ice.

Anyway, looking for an adventurous route from coast to coast that will be passable in January/February. For me, passable would be less that about 2½ feet of unplowed snow. I know this will have some risks doing it solo, so I might see if I can't talk one of my buddies into joining me in his rig, but either way, I'm up for, and specifically looking for a challenge.

If you made it all the way through reading my late night ramblings, THANK YOU! Hopefully someone knows of such a route that they can share.
