HiLift jack: is it really needed?

Anybody have any experience with using the Hi-Lift "Bumper Lift"? I've been thinking about picking one of these up since my front bumper doesn't have hi-lift mounting points on it

One more note: The Technician and General exams have a lot of "common sense" answers. So even if you are presented with a question you don't know, or a list of answers you've never seen, take your time and use common sense to narrow down the choices.

OB Approved So You Want To Be A HAM? (US Edition)

my original plan was to cram and do all three in one shot, but I ended up getting each one separately a month apart. Here's why: I heard from a few people that getting active on the radio as soon as possible should be the first goal, as actual use will help you reenforce concepts you are...

    Arizona Overlanders

Definitely! I was hoping to run that this fall/winter once things cool down again, I've never done it before.

OB Approved So You Want To Be A HAM? (US Edition)

No, ham bands are separate from the GMRS bands, so if you want transmit on the GMRS bands, you'll still need to pay the FCC for a license. I have both a GMRS license and an Extra Class amateur license so that I can adapt to whatever the group i'm riding with uses, i've never used my GMRS...

HiLift jack: is it really needed?

That's a great question, for this particular situation, an XJack would probably not have been a realistic option. Here in AZ, when you get stuck, you are typically on some relatively hard/sharp/rocky terrain, and at least according to the XJack literature, those are only meant for use on sand...

OB Approved So You Want To Be A HAM? (US Edition)

There is a grey area with MURS / GMRS and the Baofeng radios. It's technically illegal to use them on MURS or GMRS frequencies because they allow you to exceed the maximum transmit power for MURS which is 2 Watts, and for GMRS the device itself must be approved for use by the FCC, which the...

HiLift jack: is it really needed?

I had thoughts of taking mine off before as well since I hadn't ever used it. Every time somebody else needed a jack on the trail (only happened twice that i remember), somebody else had their hi-lift ready before i knew it. I have mine mounted in front of my driver door, so it's out of the way...

Who's stock, and not planning to gear up?

I'm not 100% stock, but pretty close. I've yet to encounter a trail that I can't go down. We've been on trails of all levels and out on runs with some of the "rock crawler" clubs in the area, sure we may take a bypass here and there when things get super rough, but still manage to do just fine...

What would your dream overlanding car computing setup include?

You must also use adblock like me? :D I posted the links and they didn't show up in my posts. Took me a few minutes but I figured it out. OB converts amazon links to display ads which adblock then blocks. I disabled adblock for overlandbound.com and then they started showing up as expected

I misread the listing, this DOES work with the RPi3!

What would your dream overlanding car computing setup include?

I just ran across this RPI + 7" touchscreen display case, but according to page, the holes don't align with the RPI3 would be perfect. maybe holes could be retrofitted for an RPi3 with a dremel. Might be worth the $25 just to find out at some point. there is a similar case that does fit the...

What would your dream overlanding car computing setup include?

Yeah, to clarify, my original comment about Google Earth was about both the offline mode and and the ease and usability of creating routes and mapping and such in the context of having a vehicle mounted /laptop/. I already use Hema or Gaia for downloading satellite data from time to time but...

What would your dream overlanding car computing setup include?

Yeah, I agree, in the spirit of easier and more affordable group participation/collaboration, RaspberryPi, and other similar linux-based devices, is probably our best bet to start.

    Build Thread: 2016 4Runner Trail

Thanks! Storing compressor and tools is exactly what I'm looking to do, perfect! Coincidentally, the wife wanted me to go on a Costco run tomorrow so i'll look around for some metal ones while i'm there

What cases are these on top? Right now I use the big long Plano cases but i'd love a set of smaller ones like these as well

What would your dream overlanding car computing setup include?

Yes! This is more along the lines of what I'm wanting. An actual usable GPS enabled laptop on a ram mount or something. Really, since I'm in a manual transmission JKU, I think my mounting space is just too limited though - at least for having one mounted full-time. :( I have two Raspberry Pis...
