Western Virginia Monthly Meetup (old thread)

Oh yeah, there will definitely be some tire kicking. If the weather was warmer, I had planned on doing it tailgate style. We'll figure it out!

Western Virginia Monthly Meetup (old thread)

With it being so cold, we'll probably go in if it's not too crowded. We can try to get one of the bigger tables in the center.

    Frequency Discussion and Education

Hams have more privileges on the bands such as digital modes and experimenting. Not to mention the amateur radio license is good for 1500W vs 50 for GMRS and 2 for FRS. With that, they expect a ham to be at least more knowledgeable than the average joe radio keyer. That's why FRS and GMRS exist...

    Handheld Ham Radio Adivce

Going for your ham radio license will really improve this with basic electronics theory, antenna theory, and an introduction to "formal" communication protocol. Once you have your license, please join us on the weekly Overland Bound Echolink net! It's a great way to become familiar with good...

Why you need to buy a quality Handheld (Portable) radio.

The Baofeng type radios are OK radios. They are cheap, which is nice. Heck, it was one of them bought for trail use that's largely responsible for me being an active ham now. I think they are good (mostly, they have some faults and I urge you to buy the most reliable versions of them as there...

Why you need to buy a quality Handheld (Portable) radio.

Yes, you can listen without a license. You are not allowed to speak unless you are with a licensed ham and using their call sign with them in "control" of the station. IE physically present at the radio to ensure proper use.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

If you ever find yourself in this position again and are headed to get repairs, completely remove the caliper and pinch the soft line off with vice-grips. Zip tie the pliers to the line and secure it up where it won't contact the tire and you can drive like that. It'll probably destroy the brake...

    moving on from a tacoma

How much capability are you looking for? If you don't need tons of wheel travel and lockers, then a early 2000's Chevy or GMC K1500 could be a good fit. The 5.3L before the active fuel management system was a super tough engine with TONS of aftermarket support. The 4L65E transmission in them is...

US East Northern VA / MD Monthly Meetups

I think it's a great idea! I'd love to join in, but I'm not close enough for it to be anything but a weekend trip. Maybe this spring you can do it again and I'll be able to head up and join in! I love cooking breakfast at camp. Even if it's just oatmeal and some sausage, it's still the best.

    VA Overland

So I'm not a fan of that Gaia basemap. Looks mostly like a route I worked out for myself a few years ago from Millboro north. The ride over to Lake Moomaw is mostly paved but it's nice over there. Not sure how much camping is open this time of year though. If you come down this way, give me a...
