    Wheel and tire setups

OEM wheels and Falken Wildpeaks on everything except the Samurai. The Wildpeaks are outstanding! The Samurai still has Wildpeaks but it's on a set of soft 8 steel wheels.

    Airing down Falken Wildpeaks AT3W

I generally run 18-20 in mine and haven't had an issue keeping them on the wheels.

    Fridge suggestions

I have a Base Camp 42 L or an Alpicool 20 L, depending on how much food I need to carry. Both have low voltage cutoffs to save the battery. The Basecamp stays plugged in at home and has been running for about 5 years at home and on the trail. The Alpicool is right at 4 years old and has also...

Build/overland/4x4 stuff: 1989 Raider, 2010 Sequoia, and other projects

Awesome fab work. I'm probably going to attempt bumpers for the H3T in the not-to-distant future. The store-bought stuff is insanely expensive.

First snowstorm - Got to test the Falken AT3W in snow......

I have run Wildpeaks on my XJ, Suburban, Silverado, Touareg, and Samurai for years. Several months ago I bought an H3T with Grabbers already installed. The Grabbers have been terrible tires. They have decent off-road grip and handle well, but they wear terribly and are very noisy compared to the...

    12v fridge recommendations

I have a Mr Heater Basecamp that has been running almost continuously since 2014. It has been flawless but I don't think it's available any longer. For short trips with just me, I have an Alpicool C20. It's 21 Qts, sub $200, and sips energy. It weighs 25% of the Basecamp and holds enough food...

    Going it alone, or not?

I mostly travel alone. If there is a group of us it's with my grown-up kids.

    SCAR

I would suggest taking some of the side roads in in the Francis Marion. There are some nice places on the Santee River that are worth visiting.

    SCAR

I have run the entire thing. It's a fun drive. Down near the coast, you can expect a lot of mud and gravel. The midlands are sand and clay and the mountains are mostly gravel. There are some areas where the mud gets deep so be careful driving into some of the water holes. The red clay is slick...

What is your favorite Go-To knife for overlanding.

I keep a Morakniv Companion in every vehicle as well as one in my day bag. Cheap, sharp, and durable. I don't have to baby it or care about it beyond the occasional sharpening. For daily use, I carry a Gerber Diesel.

    Camp kitchen remodel

I have the same stove. The only issue I ever had with it is it has a soft flame. A windscreen is going to be necessary to keep the wind from blowing the flame off the burners. Other than that it works very well.

Build/overland/4x4 stuff: 1989 Raider, 2010 Sequoia, and other projects

Glad to see this rig on here from GRM. It's one of my favorite builds and the ride reports are always entertaining. I look forward to seeing more. The next time y'all set up a ride, give me a shout. I'd love to join assuming you don't mind an extra rig. Allen, AKA Toyman! in the land of GRM.

    Dynamic Balancing Beads

I use them in my class A motorhome tires. They have worked perfectly for thousands of miles. My off-road tires are still machine-balanced, but only because I have had to buy a set in a while. I'll be using beads in the next set I mount.

    Time for a new engine…

I looked into the 2.8 Cummins swap for my XJ. It was going to cost over $15k to do it. For that kind of money, I could do an LS swap. Twice.

    Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail

I run both of them. Here's my 2 cents worth. I have the AT Trail tires on my Ridgeline. They are an outstanding compromise between an AT and an all season. I will be buying another set. I put a pile of miles on them this summer including several hundred exploring gravel and dirt roads in the...

    New Tire Advice

I run Widlpeak AT3s on just about everything except my Ridgeline. They have been exceptional on everything from my Suburban, to my XJ, and all the way down to my Samurai. On-road, off-road, mud, or sand they are really exceptional tires. I run Wildpeak AT Trail on the Ridgeline. They are also...

Sleeping Pads What do you use? Looking....

I use one of these. from $91 with code QTVD20 - QOMOTOP Camping Mattress 1 People / 2 People | Blue / Grey / Brown It is not thin. It doesn't pack very small. But it is by far the best camp mattress I've ever used. Almost as comfortable as sleeping in my bed at home. It is well worth the...

Mine are mounted on a shelf right above my spare tire.
