old_man's Offroad Teardrop Trailer Build Thread

What ever works. I am an engineer and can't stop designing, and I am a tightwad. If I had started with a trailer, I might have had more time and gotten done sooner. My biggest problem was that life kept getting in the way.

    Slider coating question.

I can highly recommend a paint from a company I have done business with for decades. The company name is Top Secret Coatings. Their single part marine epoxy is a moisture catalyzing paint that goes on really thin but covers. It gets very hard and is chip and UV resistant. It is so hard that...

    Tent Stakes

I have a bunch of 18" x.5" rebar with welded rings. First I put a bar through the ring and rotate while banging sideways. If that doesn't work, I hook a high lift under it and jack it out. I have even uses a 18" block of firewood, ran a strap from the stake up over the block and to the...

    Hello from Nederland, Colorado

Welcome, I was just through there yesterday. I live in Loveland. We are having a get together soon, so watch. Hope to meet you. A couple of us may go snow bashing Sunday afternoon. I am a bit worried about conditions. I went up and found way more ice than snow. It was fun watching the...

Outsideonline article, "No, You Don't Need to Modify Your Truck to Go Off-Road"

You can do 85% of BLM roads with no locker and that goes up to 95% with a LSD. Skill and experience is the single biggest factor and the only way to get these is to get out and try, preferably with others with more experience to learn from.

    XJ Owner from KC!

Contact me back channel. First off, don't deck the head unless it is warped. If you want to take the compression up, deck the block. You can do a budget stroker with just the crank, rods. There are no custom mods to clear the valves. You should run the H802CP pistons. Decking the block...

    XJ Owner from KC!

Before you go any further give me a call. If you are already buying pistons and such, why not find a used 4.2L crank and rods and build a stroker? I routinely have picked up cranks and rods for around $125. You will gain significantly more torque and power and if you are like me, your...

old_man's Offroad Teardrop Trailer Build Thread

Here is a pix today near home at Camp Dick, Colorado. Elevation 8753 ft. I made a pot of Hazelnut coffee and some hot soup. I am working on a polished diamond plate backing behind and to the side of the stove to keep thing clean. I am also making the mounts for the propane grill so it will...

Arkansan vacationing in Colorado needs trail advice for July 2018.

Book real early. The rates are far higher in the summer and the later you wait. The Hotel Ouray right down town is a no frills, very old but cool place. It is up stairs with no elevator. Rooms are really small, but beat the hell out of a tent. Personally I kind of like it. Right across...

    Wee Jim

I love your build. You really kept things in proportion. The best thing is that you are using it instead of just showing it off at the mall. I have always wanted to visit Scotland. My family is from there. I traced them back to 1022 and Clan McCloud. You have me thinking about shipping my...

I can't agree more. I started doing this before most of you were born. I grew up high in the mountains of Colorado on the family ranch. I learned in a 2WD 1962 Ford F100 with snowtires and a Detroit in the rear. I have run virtually every trail a normal overlander would want to run in...

Arkansan vacationing in Colorado needs trail advice for July 2018.

Lodging in Ouray and Telluride is spendy. Silverton, is also but not quite as bad, but very limited. Trails start opening mid to late July but this can vary significantly. Drones can be problematic. Check with the forest service. I figure if you aren't obnoxious with it, you are normally...

    Overland Safety: First-Aid Kits

Never said to use a tampon. Direct pressure using a Kotex or the equivalent has been used for decades. Not everybody is going to go out and buy a special product when they have something that could work in their bathroom. I carry a bleeding stopper as well, but there are other options.
