    2017 VW Alltrack. @LFTDVW

It's great those sensor wires are long enough. They are a problem on my VW van and I've snapped one when my suspension was overly extended.

    Carrying an OZ Tent

Should be fine. I would have the bars about half the length of the tent apart, maybe 4ft and equal overhang at both ends. They are pretty solid (and heavy). I've carried it on my Nissan for thousands of miles, it has 3 bars, but the overall distance is only about that. Only strapped down on the...

Books that Inspired You to Get into Overlanding

I thought I'd start a thread for people to post details about books they have read that inspired them to get into overlanding. Here are three from my own bookshelf I have selected. They all have an Australian slant of some kind: 1. African Adventure (A Senile Safari), Hazel Barker 1995. By the...

    CA West Canada Tuktoyaktuk

I can't get to this one, but definitely on the list in a year or two.

    What next?

Go out in it and enjoy. If you come back after several trips away and think "I really need that" go out a few more times and if you still think the same put it on your list.

    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

You are welcome to restart the net on the original *USA-GNG* EchoLink server, they would be pleased to have us back. I would also be also happy to run some of the Echolink nets, more so after the US changes to daylight savings as it puts the net, in my timezone (UTC+10), into Saturday afternoon...

Growing the New Zealand OB community - meet ups, FB group, etc

An extended visit to NZ, to go overlanding, is definitely on my list.

Does Overlanding Require You to Go Off Pavement?

As far as being classified as overlanding, would probably draw the line at driving primarily on the interstate and staying at hotels every night. There are plenty of epic trips on mostly pavement, like the Pan American, that nobody could deny is overlanding. Just get out there and explore.

    Resolved Metric Please....

I'm amazed at how hard it is to even get a metric topographic map nowadays, most of the electronic ones, eg. Garmin, are in feet even for Australia. Because of the raster format, it's not something that can be changed on a device.

See a lot of different medical issues, but none about snake bites while out in the desert.

I am wondering, do first-aid courses in America cover snake bite treatment? It is covered quite comprehensively, in first-aid courses in Australia, as well as the treatments for other venomous creatures. Many of which are even poisonous to just touch like the Box Jellyfish. It is recommended...

Cutting and sucking does not work full stop, be it on humans or anything else.

Does anyone here uses digital HAM radio?

I Have D-STAR. I was looking for an FM-only radio but the IC-2820 was a good price. Digital modes would be great for Overlanding if everyone had them as the audio is much clearer. It's good that most of them have FM as well.

Vancouver Island Trip - Pacific Rim Park

Not much help, but I'm putting a reply in here so I get notified when others reply with the good stuff. Vancouver Island is definitely on my list when I go Overlanding in North America.

    Handheld or Permanent HAM?

Sattelite comms have their limitations. They do not work well when mobile (yes I include handheld sat phones in that). They might connect you to anywhere, but what you really need is someone local. For overland convoys and travel, nothing beats the humble 2-way radio, be it HAM, CB, GMRS/FRS

    Overlander interior build up

I used 12mm marine plywood, which gives a good compromise between weight and strength. Mine is still a work in progress, and I'm going to add another telescopic draw under the slide-out bench (top on the stove side), to better mount the stove. The depth is shallow behind the 3rd-row seating, so...

    Rack-mounted ladder hooks?

Can the ladder length be locked when extended? If so, there would be no problem in loading those bolts as they would be in compression/extension unless the vehicle was in a serious front-to-back angle (side force). Most things I build are over-engineered, but I would probably try and get some...

    Any smokers in here?

I'm all set. To keep it on track, The steak would go well in a smoker.

It's Australia Day, next Thursday, so definitely some Kangaroo Steaks being cooked.

Can Subarus drive on the beach?

Does your subi have a center diff lock or equivalent? If it does, it's no different to any conventional 4wd on the sand as, usually, you drive in high range anyway. Being lighter, it would be much better than some of the others.

    Any smokers in here?

You should show your setup. I'd like to start doing some myself, both for food preservation (mainly fish) and the taste. Smoking food, even barbecuing, in my neighbourhood is fairly controversial at the moment. Some of the locals object to the smell in the environment, but really they are...
