Short Trip Plan to USA/Canada 2024

Thanks for the information I always thought the GC would be a bit of a push (it was just something my wife has wanted to see for years). I'm used to 400mi days on Aussie backroads but the US is a different country. I might just do Yellowstone and the Tetons, and Glacier as you suggested. The...

Short Trip Plan to USA/Canada 2024

I'm planning a short trip to USA/Canada in June/July 2024. The original plan was to go to a cycling event in Kellogg Idaho and then to Overland Expo PNW, there should be 2 weeks between the 2. My wife wants to go to the Grand Canyon, I'm thinking of visiting Yellowstone and Yosemite National...

    OB Approved Members Spotted Thread

Has anybody used a temporary solution to identify them as an OB member? My rig is geographically constrained to Australia, if that ever changes, which I hope it will someday, members spotting that should get bonus points. But in the meantime, I do plan to do some travel elsewhere in the world...

    Overlanding with bears?

I looked at this post a while back. I have a question. I'm planning to spend some time in Oregon, Idaho, and Alberta. Is there anybody in that area who trains people to use bear spray in an environment that does not involve actual bears? and maybe placebo spray. I'm more concerned with other...

What is the best piece of advice you can give a new overlander?

I'm figuring it was a joke, but the reverse of what he said. Your overlanding setup should be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Get out there and figure out what you're really missing.

Problems in Europe with Vehicle on Carnet

It seems very odd you even need a carnet for Europe. I've been doing some research for my own international driving adventure. One of the first countries we intend to go to does require a Carnet. It may come down to the Carnet issuer but from the correspondence that I have so far their only...

    The Grenadier....

Perhaps it cannot pass the emissions tests. Europe and the US have different standards, and passing the US standard with a relatively small-capacity diesel is often difficult even if it passes the Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV) standards for Europe.

    Minimum Ground Clearance?

Ground clearance is not the best measurement. Look at Approach Angle, Ramp Over and Departure Angle. Obviously the longer the wheelbase the higher a vehicle has to be to achieve a good rampover angle.

    Snorkel

One thing you should consider is where the original intake is situated. Many newer vehicles have the intake in vulnerable positions, usually sacrificing practicality for style. If the intake is behind the bumper, behind the grille or in the wheel arch, it will be a lot more susceptible to...

    Jeep Water Fording Ability

Thankyou for the information Dave, that is what I was after. The search for my next vehicle is just starting, but I've always liked the size and ability of the Jeeps.

    Jeep Water Fording Ability

I'm amazed that the drain hole doesn't have a one-way valve. I'm not planning on intentionally drowning the vehicle, but snorkels are a bit of insurance that I usually fit and they help keep the dust out of the air filter as well. I'd still rather replace an electronic module than a...

    Jeep Water Fording Ability

Has anybody got any experience when it comes to the water-fording abilities of Jeeps? The specific vehicle I am curious about is a JT Gladiator, but a JL Wrangler with the Pentastar engine would be similar. I would likely fit a snorkel and breathers to give some protection anyway. This is a...

    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

Do you mean EchoLink? or DMR? If there is a system where we can be on both that's ok too. Let me know if you want it on EchoLink in the previous timeslot, 20:30 Eastern, 17:30 Pacific on Friday, and I will run the net. I'm available on May 5, 18, 26.

Great. If we could get another couple of volunteers it should be viable once again.

To slide out Kitchen or not to slide out kitchen

I'm not going to influence your choices. I generally make my own, mainly because nothing off the shelf fits easily in my vehicle. But I do have a question: How much battery capacity do you have to run that induction hotplate?

Leaving our van in a South Asian country

If you have sleeping and or cooking facilities in your van you may not be able to even enter Singapore. A few overlanders have disguised the fact they have living quarters in the vehicle and have gotten away with it.

Let's see those rigs in action

I really liked this, especially how the European vehicles were travelling in Alaska. Potentially I'd like to do something similar, although my "European" vehicle is currently in Australia, I'd like to go there before too long. You have a new subscriber to your YouTube channel.
