Not a bad idea at all. It just really depends on your needs. For me I wanted quick setup, the ability to reduce my gear ( and since I can keep all my bedding in the rtt that helps) and room for 4 to 5 people, so the rtt worked for me after trying ground tents. Ground tents worked and rtts do...

With 3 kids, I would recommend the cvt mt Denali. It's their 4+ person tent but it's huge. I have comfortably slept 5 adults and tightly slept 6. Tons of room and great build quality. Sent from my LG-H810 using Tapatalk

I've got quick fists holding my fiskars axe into my Leitner rack. It rides around back there with no issues. That being said, if I'm parking my rig for more than 10 minutes at anywhere but work or home, I pull the quick release fire extinguisher, the first aid kit and the axe, and lock them in...
