Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance August 4th and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
You need to get out there with your vehicle as is. You will figure out what YOU need to do to your vehicle to improve your experience.
From the list, I would prioritise things that make it safe for you like first aid, navigation and driver training.
If you are a newbie, travel with friends that...
I really like this device, my Garmin Montana 700i.
I've used the other Garmin Inreach devices and their interface is awful, the same as their other backpacking GPS units.
The Montana interface is more like a mobile phone, with proper touchscreen controls and message typing.
The display is large...
...experience. Look for lightweight and compact options that are easy to transport.
6. Navigation Tools: A reliable GPS device or navigationapp can help you navigate off the beaten path. Also, if technology fails you, carry a physical map as a backup.
7. First Aid Kit: Accidents happen, so...

I have electronics that use Google/Apple/Gaia maps and a Gamin satellite navigation device, which I use primarily for roads. But…I always have “old school” maps, too. The 50-state Rand McNally resides in the seat back pocket and I have trail maps for many National Parks, forests and wilderness...
This is one option. I would recommend you go with the upgraded ram/rom on it too. Ours is low powered and you can tell when trying to get apps to fire up. But once it's running it's great.

Now it comes down to winter projects. Upgrades include:

We’ve just completed our last long trip, 51,000 km around Canada, and are selling the Jeep Wrangler JK Sahara Unlimited 4 door which was perfect for the trip. We took out the rear seats and fitted a bed frame and custom-made mattress, with storage space below the bed. The forward section of the...
I just upgraded my head unit to this 10 " android 12 unit, loaded it with IGO for street navigation and Ozi Explorer for off-road mapping, going bush on the weekend so get to check it out.
I have a Garmin Montana 700i.
It has a much better interface than the smaller InReach's, almost like using a standard mobile with a touchscreen and familiar keyboard interface.
Although it doesn't have a consistent phone number, those who need to reach me can enter the Garmin email into the...
I use a combo of a few apps (digital navigation), dedicated GPS (in-vehicle navigation) and paper maps (in-hand navigation) for travel. However, when it comes to tracking purposes, I'm pretty simple.
It really depends on what vehicle you start out with as the base.
A stock Jeep, Tacoma, or the like is pretty capable from the factory.
So I started with a 2016 JKUR. Came with a 1.75" lift and 285/70/17 Falcon MT tires. No urgent need to upgrade any of that.
Came with lockers front and rear...
Speaking of paper maps, does anyone know of a source online for MVUM paper maps? I know they’re generally free at ranger stations, but when I head out for weekend trips I can never seem to make it to the ranger station before they close.
I’m generally pretty ok at keeping my bearings and...
Interesting concept, however, being the overlanding curmudgeon that I am and since I depend on no digital mapping tools, I leave breadcrumbs. Actually, my wife is amazed at how well I remember where I have driven before, sometimes years later. We were recently out with a fellow traveler that...
