I saw "Pleasanton" in the title and thought I'd say Hi. I'm at the Kaiser offices a few exits down 580. I'm ex-PSFT, so seems like I knew half the the early Workday crew.
My 4X Innovation sliders are supposed to be delivered today. I will have them powder coated, figuring that for most of the surface area of the sliders, this is the best, longest lasting protection. For the areas likely to contact rocks and be scratched, I can touch those up up with paint as...
@Arepas, it all depends on where you plan to travel. Acknowledging that you're heading out early (always a good call), consider this advice for future reference. If you're just heading up one of the highways, the basics are all you need. The lists above are all good, although perhaps overkill...
I might see you on Saturday. I'll be in Bear Valley for the weekend, but might be heading to the Eastern Sierras for a day trip.
I attempted Corral Hollow two weeks ago from both ends. The first day I started from the East. I ran into three other vehicles (older Land Cruiser, full-size Chevy...
@Saints&Sailors, thanks for letting me know about the Superfund site. I was aware of the mine, but not its downstream impacts. So sad. That section of the East Fork of the Carson is a designated Wild and Scenic river. If I go, I might hike upstream from where the trial hits the river, which...
Thanks for the update! I'd be coming from Bear Valley, so not making the trek all the way from Oakland for the day. If I go I'll definitely check out the hot springs. I suspect the fishing would be good in that area as well.
Has anyone been down the Barney Riley route off HWY 89 in Eastern CA lately? Thinking about doing it as a day trip this Sunday, 10/21, and wanted to get a current report. Here's a link to the trail on FunTreks:

I assume a stock 4Runner TRD...
Thanks, @James Feldermann! I'll give it a go in a few weeks when I'm back in BV. I have spent a lot of my life cleaning up after others on hiking trails, so am an ardent "leave no trace" advocate. The good news is that there seems to be less "intentional" trash on the trails these days. It's...
That was the Donnell fire, over on 108. It was behind Spicer Reservoir. It was mostly contained when I was there in early September, but you could still see a couple plumes of smoke off to the south.
If the road you mentioned is the one you can see in the picture of the ski area, that just...
Here are some other views from the top. Some of these are after a hike and scramble to the end of the ridge to the left. You can see the Bear Valley ski area, Salt Springs Reservoir, and the Mokelumne River valley.
Such a beautiful spot! I can picture it now...and definitely wish I were there! I'll let you know before I head back, most likely next fall. Although, I'm contemplating a pre-runoff trip in the spring if I can time the weather correctly.
And don't discount our high-Sierra streams. A 2-wt...
@Slamson00, thanks for the tips and the confidence. I might give it a go, depending on how reliable a spotter I judge my passenger(s) to be. If not this weekend, then definitely sometime before the snow starts to fall.
Is anyone heading into Corral Hollow near Bear Valley next weekend? I'd like to tag along for the day, assuming a stock TRD Pro 4Runner is acceptable company. It would be my first trip in there, so I'd prefer not to go solo. I won't be camping...cabin in BV.
Let me know.
