    Cheap “Tips” and “Tricks

Cars aren't 100% airtight, but with the windows up and the vehicle not moving there's not a lot of air transfer. On my 4Runner the only significant openings would be the HVAC inlet from the cowl (if it's not on recirc mode) and the pressure vent in the rear which has a flap so it flows out only...

    Wiring help

What size circuit breaker are you going to use? I ask because the wires from the battery to the breaker and from the breaker to each fuse block should all be large enough AWG to carry the maximum current allowed by the breaker. In your diagram you show 6 AWG to each fuse block which means your...

Plates and bowls, let's overthink this together

While being stuck at home sheltering in place I've been going through my camp kitchen gear. I've never been completely satisfied with our current set of plates and bowls since they don't nest well and have been looking into options, and I'm interested in hearing what the rest of the OB community...

    Cheap “Tips” and “Tricks

Sleeping in your truck saves a lot of time since you don't have to set up a tent. One downside is that you need to figure out ventilation, and many of the "mesh bag over the window" and "hold it in place with magnets" solutions don't seal very well. Instead you can use scrap 1/8" plywood and...

    Cheap “Tips” and “Tricks

Throw a Luci Lux or two on your dashboard while you drive and you'll never need to worry about replacing batteries. We like the "frosted" version since they give out a warm diffuse light and work great for lighting a dinner table or camp kitchen. They'll run all night on the low mode and make a...

    Utah trip 2020

My family and I just went on a 9-day road trip to Utah in mid March right as restaurants and other services started closing down. We went to Zion, Arches, Canyonlands (Island in the Sky), and Bryce along with other stops. The #1 thing to know is that taking a road trip during this pandemic is...

    Chevy Colorado/Technical ability

MOAK, does his Colorado have the Z71 or ZR2 package, or is it a base model? What kind of tires are on it? I ran Elephant hill many years ago and don't remember any highly technical spots, just a really narrow section that required some care to not scrape the sides. Coincidentally, my friend in...

    Electrical system advice needed

Did you have any specific questions? Overall I don't see any issues with the diagram, everything is protected by a fuse or breaker and large loads are switched using relays. You have two relays marked R3 and two marked R6, but I'm assuming that is just a copy/paste issue. Where are you...

    3rd Gen 4Runner - Driveshaft replacement?

Their comment about repairing the CV end seems odd if your issue is with the u-joint on the diff end. The diff u-joint is a bit of a pain to remove, to the point where I paid a local shop ~$30 to swap it out using their shop press. I tried to press it out using a bench vise and some large...

    3rd Gen 4Runner - Driveshaft replacement?

Did they explain why they only would replace the entire driveshaft? I replaced the diff-side u-joint in my rear shaft years ago and it has been fine. That said, at 270k the cv side could be getting old as well.

    Line Breaking Strength

In a double line pull each section of rope carries 1/2 of the load applied to the snatch block. So, if your winch is pulling 10k then the force on each "side" of the rope is 10k and the force on the snatchblock is 20k. There's a picture on this site...

    Wiring help

100A is a reasonably large amount of current, and you'd likely need to run 4awg wire (check the charts). In fact, I have this exact setup in my Tacoma (picture below). In my case the large breaker was because I have an ARB dual compressor that draws a lot of current. If you can find the current...

    Wiring help

Be sure to size the breaker and wire feeding it properly. The purpose for the breaker is to protect the wire from experiencing too much current, so if you have a fixed breaker size in mind (ex 80A) you should pick a wire gauge that can carry that current plus a reasonable overhead. The breaker...

    Suggestions for HAM radios

From a legal standpoint there are two important things to keep in mind: - The vast majority of ham radios are not type certified to transmit on GMRS frequencies (I'm not aware of any that are). This means that it is illegal to do so, and the FCC can fine you. Even if you have both ham and GMRS...

Who owns a Land Rover ?

I forgot to mention that it also had some rust around the "skylight" windows at the top of the rear and the windows were leaking. This wasn't anything major, but it took a lot of time to pull the windows, deal with the rust, and install new seals. Just one more thing on a very long todo list.

Who owns a Land Rover ?

The CA diesel title was the primary reason I purchased it in the first place. But, the truck had a lot of other issues that needed work: - Major steering fluid leak (fixed this) - Failed clutch slave cylinder (fixed this) - Major paint fade on roof and hood (not a big deal) - Clutch fork punched...

Bailing Wire Uses & Type Recommendations

Bailing wire is a good thing to carry since it is lightweight, strong, and heat resistant. I carry some 16 gauge galvanized bailing wire in my recovery kit. As mentioned above, you can also use wire to create hose clamps. I do this on airlines using .041" (18 gauge) Safety Lock Wire and a...

    How to wire a winch

I have a fuse inline with my winch's positive cable, just in case there is a short. The wire is wrapped in a section of hose but over time vibrations could still potentially wear through the insulation. The fuse is cheap insurance.
