Someone stole my rims and tent...

Al, I'd like to appologize for being part of the reason your thread went off track. I'm frustrated by the way politics seems to get injected in so many threads on OB, and I posted a snarky reply which didn't help.

High lift jack or exhaust jack?

One of the benefits of a bottle jack is you can lift the truck by the axle, which means that the only added height over stock is due to taller tires. The factory Toyota jack works fine on both my Toyotas on 32" tires with room to spare. Best thing to do is try out your factory jack on your truck...

High lift jack or exhaust jack?

Do you have suitable jacking points on your T4R to use a high lift, such as sliders and front/rear bumpers with designated jack points? Alternatively there is a kit where you can lift by the wheel, but then you need to also carry a jack stand so you can remove the wheel after lifting with it...

Someone stole my rims and tent...

Yeah, it still amazes me that crime happens here but not in any other states. It just doesn't make sense. https://www.bestplaces.net/compare-cities/san_jose_ca/miami_fl/crime

    Kenwood D710GA Mounting Solutions

Personally I don't like things sticking out from the dash, so I mounted the face in a cubby behind the cupholders on my Tacoma. The plug in the picture is an extension for the mic. The body for the Kenwood (and my CB) are both under the drivers seat. I just installed an external speaker for...

Is Goose Gear worth the money?

I used old server rails when I built my drawers in 2011 and they've held up fine over many miles of dirt/rock roads. http://www.blankwhitepage.com/gallery/t4r_drawer/IMG_2943 At one point the mounting screws started to get loose, so I reinstalled them with some threadlock which fixed the...

    Gazelle Tent

I don't use a tarp with our Gazelle, primarily because it adds to the time it takes to setup and take down the tent. Since the tent only takes ~90s to take down the extra time to shake out and fold a tarp really adds up. :) The floor of the Gazelle is pretty strong and I have had no issues with...

    19 4Runner Storage/Sleeping System

Nice grain on that plywood, and nice build! I carpeted my drawer and it has worked well for many years. The benefits are that it looks factory from outside the vehicle, helps keep things from sliding around, and is a nice surface to sleep on if you plan to sleep in your rig. Downsides are that...

    Gazelle Tent

+1 to having "carpet" in the tent. We use a large Nemo Equipment blanket that is also great for picnics. A floor mat goes outside to stand on while taking shoes on and off.

Someone stole my rims and tent...

Wow, really sorry to hear that. At least you got some free milk crates out of it (joking). Years ago I lived in SF and a roomate had the wheels stolen off his car. The vehicle was left on milk crates, which I still have.

    Tahoe bound

As Kent mentioned the Stanislaus NF is asking people not travel to the national forest due to Covid. When it is reopened I recommend looking into Utica, Union, and Spicer reservoirs. There is also some camping near the Highland Lakes.

    Gazelle Tent

How effective was the rainfly in the snow? Did you have any snow fall in the doors when they were open since the fly doesn't extend all that far past the body of the tent? I haven't had our T4 in rain or snow yet and have been curious how protected the doors are.

    DIY Relay Box

Yup, I've used negative side switching in other projects in the past (such as my tailgate light). I was trying to understand the "high vs low voltage" terminology. Thanks again for the clarification.

    DIY Relay Box

Ok, I think I understand what you are saying. You are calling the coil side of the relay the "low amperage" side and the switched side the "high amperage" side. Thanks. The coil side is a low current circuit that uses an electromagnet to switch the high current side.

Winch Gloves: You use them Correct?

Are your concerns with wearing gloves while winching related to when the line is out and you are winching a vehicle, or when you are respooling it onto the drum? I think most manufacturers recommend wearing gloves anytime you are performing a recovery, especially with steel rope. But, when...

What do you air down to?

Ultimately it depends on the weight of your truck, side wall height, and sidewall strength. With the 265/75R16s Bighorns on my 4Runner 18psi works well. With the 265/70R17s KO2 on my Tacoma 18psi is too low and 20-22psi works better. I recommend not going below ~15psi unless you have...

    DIY Relay Box

Hi Mike, Can you clarify what you mean by "high voltage side" and "low voltage side"? The diagram in the original post shows +12v from the battery going through a fuse and then to both the switch (30) and coil (86) terminals of the relay. The other side of the coil (85) is I assume connected...

    Pinnacle Rock-Mendocino NF

I camped in the middle of the Mendocino NF east of Lake Pillsbury on Memorial Day weekend. There were a surprising number of people looking for primitive camping spots, and given that the mountains are steep in that area and the roads have few turnoffs viable camping spots were difficult to find.

    DIY Relay Box

Just to clarify, almost all cars are "negative ground" since the negative terminal of the battery is connected to the body, causing the entire body to be at ground potential. I think what Michael did is switch the negative side of his loads instead of the positive side. In other words, he...
