He is being serious. The forest service roads in the Ouachita and Ozark forests are public lands. Free to explore and free to dispersed camp in the national forest.

Check out the Enchanted Rockies trail (ERT) going north of Santa Fe. I traveled it south from Colorado and was pretty scenic.
Not sure how you plan on traveling up there but might consider part of the New Mexico backcountry discovery route (NMBDR).
I’ve had my eye on this route for sometime. Will be interested in what you find out.

My 88 4runner with the 3.0 v6 just rolled 300k on the original motor. Only engine work ever done were valve cover gaskets. Uses half quart of oil every 3k miles and purrs like a kitten.
The 85 I had before it I swapped in a 7mge from a Supra. Engine had 290k when I got rid of it.

You are right about there being great places out west to explore.
I got the crossmember, skid/belly pan for my 1st gen. On my last trip it got really put to the test and passed with flying colors.
