    Moving to Illinois this summer

What kind of camping? Tent/RV/Car? Will you be working while you're here, or just coming for 'visit'? There really isn't much in the way of campgrounds in this area (as you found out), especially if you're wanting to stay close to the base. At one point in time, there use to be campsites...

looking at vehicles, how insane do I need to go for overlanding?

^^ Ah, with those extra tidbits, I would just go with a 'true' 4wd of whatever flavor you want. Since your yearly mileage is nothing, I don't think the advantages that the subie can offer are really worth it in this case (MPG, ease of driving, etc). So yeah, if you like the Pro after a...

looking at vehicles, how insane do I need to go for overlanding?

I snipped a bit out Smiley's post, but all of this and some of what has been said before in this thread. You can get out an see a ton of places in the lowly FWD econo-box platforms. The wife and I have logged many miles on her old stratus and G6, often taking them places they really shouldn't...

    Hello from Illinois...

The same. Currently renting near St. E's in the center of town while we work on finishing up building on the NW side of town. I think I have seen that Jeep running around town a time or two. I know I stick out like sore thumb when I am out and about, so feel free to say Hi if you see us!

    Hello from Illinois...

    Hi neighbor!

What makes a rim good for off road?

As others have already mentioned, I try to stay stock if possible, but if I need to change the wheel for some reason, I tend to gravitate towards steel wheels: - Can be bent back if needed - The wight difference between comparable strength Alu wheel is negligible by the time you factor in the...

    Sway Bar Disconnects

This and carry a dead blow hammer with you as it'll take a love tap or two to get them on and off if everything isn't perfectly level. Another tip is to find a place to either "Park" the sway bar with both disconnects removed (Velcro strap works well for this to tie it up). Or if there is...

    Right of way?

All of this is correct. But in the end, apply common sense to create a safe situation to pass and it'll work itself out. For example, on shelf roads there are usually a few pull outs here and there to allow for passing to happen. If there is one truck heading up hill (has the right of way)...

Can Anyone Help This Young Blood Out?

By "kick out" on the sliders, they're talking about the part that kicks out right before the rear wheels. That little portion will help shift the truck over a tick when sliding along before the rear tire hits it. Or at least that's the idea anyway.

Can Anyone Help This Young Blood Out?

I've always been a fan of welding the sliders on, but I tend to rub the hell out of mine out here in the midwest. To each their own on that one. I'd grab a photo or two off of the net and see about finding a fabrication or 4x4 shop near you. Swing by for a visit with them and see what they...

Can Anyone Help This Young Blood Out?

So slightly different approach based on your prior responses, but pretty much in line with the prior posts. Armor up (Sliders, skid plates, etc) as this is something that you can keep with you as you continue to move forward with the build. I wouldn't race out to buy bumpers right out of the...

Can Anyone Help This Young Blood Out?

To add to this, what do you want to do with the truck, and what is your off-roading experience? Without having a good idea of where you want to end up, you will likely wind up spending quite a bit more money than you intended by redoing things over the years, and possibly cause yourself undo...

Rock sliders - paint, powdercoat or linex???

I prefer the rustoleum wrinkle finish (in a can). I've found it to be much more durable than I expected it to be, and it is easy to touch up as needed. I just goop it on on with a brush rather than doing several coats with a can. It 'self levels' pretty well assuming you aren't trying to...

    Moving to Illinois this summer

You're kind of boned there as there isn't much in the way of remote camping (with a vehicle, there is remote camping via long hiking trails though). Probably more than what you'll find in MD, but still essentially zero compared to the states out west. There are some nice state campgrounds in...

    Moving to Illinois this summer

Welcome to the area! I've been in the O'Fallon area (next town over from Scott) since 1990, so feel free to ask me any questions about the area and hopefully I can point you in the right direction. Depending on what you're looking to do adventure wise, there is a pretty good mix of things to...
