Tell me about your favorite (Route, Interstate, A or B road) highway? I am asking because it's a great way for me to plan a trip.

My number one favorite is U.S. Route 395. It crosses California and a small bit of Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and ends in Canada. 395 is the main link between all our trips. It starts and ends our trips. We camp, off-road, site see, photography and explore. In a short distance, you can experience a lot of different terrains and climates. From 395 in about one hour you can drive to the lowest elevation or be at the trailhead to the highest elevation in the lower 48. You have to admit that's pretty amazing stretch of road.

I'm sure you have a favorite as well, so please share.

Paved: US 191 along the AZ/NM border between Morenci and Alpine/Springerville. The road is awesome going North, but it's a religious experience going South on a clear day.

Unpaved: I spent untold tanks of gas driving the circuit around the Catalina Mts near Tucson AZ when I was in high school. Tucson to Benson and then up Pomerene Rd, come back into town via Redington Pass, the back side of Mt Lemmon, or Oracle depending on mood. Current favorite would have to be FR144 through the Jemez Mts NW of Albuquerque, with the Gilman tunnels to start the day. A wide variety of views, graded dirt roads, somewhat technical rock beds (not enough to really threaten a decent 4x4, but enough to warrant 4-low), views, and more views.

My wife and I have been on only two small sections of US 191 and absolutely enjoyed every mile. Springerville to Alpine and camped at Luna Lake campground. The other sections was from West Yellowstone Montana to Jackson Wyoming and it was equally as grand.

Theoretician, Thank you for the tip.

That is quite the list you have. I have taken the train from Durango to Silverton Colorado And then I drove Highway 550 out of Silverton. My wife and I thought that was some amazing country.

Thank you for the rest of the list. I'll check that'll out.

For paved highways; I would second US550 (Million Dollar Highway) between Ouray and Silverton. We like to say that the highway only let's the "right kind of people" get to us in Silverton :)

#1 - Starting from Moab, UT:

1. 191 South
2. 95 West
3. 24 West
4. 12 South

End in Bryce Canyon National Park

This route passes through several parks and monument, some of the prettiest southern Utah red rock country, and takes you across the Devils Backbone. Seriously, one of my favorite road trips.

#2 would be Highway 1 all the way from Mexico to Canada…or visa-versa.
