What is the one spice

But salt. Is the only one I use.

Better question. If you had to eliminate a basic ingredient, additive, what would it be.

For me, sugar, I've already done it. Pure black coffee is the only way to go. I have not bought sugar for 20 years.

Lately I've been using quiet a bit of paprika in my food (along with garlic salt and onion salt on roasted chicken and potatoes).

I'm not a cook but I love these cooking threads because I'm not a cook.
Every idea is an inspiration.

Many thanks chefs.

Salt is actually a mineral, not a spice. Therefore, it does not lose its flavor over time like spices and herbs do.

Now, as to the one spice - nope, not gonna limit myself to one. Garlic powder, cardamon, cumin, smoked paprika, Herbs de Provence, etc. I like choices.

Funny, years ago, on a call-in radio station.....The "X-Men" movie had just come out & they show hosts were taking calls on the subject "If you could create/be an X-Men character, what would it be?"
Someone called in & said "I'd want to be a character "the Spice" , where I could just point any one of my fingers & WHOOSH, Garlic powder, Onion Powder, Cilantro, Thyme, salt, pepper, etc would shoot out of my fingers!"

(of course another guy called in & said "XMen? RuPaul, Elton John & Bruce Jenner") :tearsofjoy:

Salt is a mineral and already allowed by the rules of the game.
Fresh garlic is also given.
Onions as well.
Lime is a fruit.
Lemon is a fruit.
Fresh peppers are fruits.

What's missing is obviously smoked paprika.

Bourbon is a spice, isn't it?

Then my own spice mix made up various spices and thrown in a shaker - chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, cumin, oregano, paprika, salt and pepper. ehh it varies sometimes. I assume this isn't cheating since other commercial blends are shown.

Amazon has Coghlan's Multi-Grill Spice and Herb Assortment for $6, you get six of the most often used in a single container.

Our go to seasoning even at home is Santa Maria...we cook meat with it, saute veggies with it and roast potatoes with it.
