"Survival"/ gun questions.

When I lived in Alaska, my first firearm was a Mossberg 500. When in the bush, it was loaded with 00Buck and slugs in alternation. I found that many times in camp I would put it down somewhere and be a good distance from it. If a bear had popped into camp it would have been 50/50 if I could have got to it in time. I switched to a .44 Mag in a cross-draw bandoleer holster that I only took off at bedtime.

Yep, go with a shotgun. I CC a Glock 22 and I usually have my Remington 870 loaded with slugs just in case when I go camping. Check state regs for firearms in National Parks/Forest too.

Check out the Kel Tec KSG. You can find terrible reviews on-line, but I know a guy with one, and he loves it. Bullpup design makes it very compact (26") has twin Mags (7 each), so you can load slugs on one side and birdshot in the other. Watch this review:

I am a big fan of the 870, I've got a side saddle and light on mine. Anything more then that is overkill.

Sure, it may be a coincidence or even luck, but the chances of a bear attack are slim... I am torn between the "better be safe than sorry" crowd and the "bring what you can shoot accurately"... I usually have my 1022 takedown on my rollbar and either a 9mm, .40 or .45 handgun on me when out in the wilderness... I also have ran into people who are not the "gun type" and carrying a shotgun or rifle while hiking it's no fun. ..

I carry my Glock 9MM all the time. Out in the woods while camping, I do carry my old police special .357 and I keep an old Remington 12 gauge pump action.

The idea that you're going to get in a gun fight and need 30 rounds is, to say the least, unlikely. Try shooting a squirrel, bird, or bear, with a .223. You won't be happy with the results ;-) Bird shot, 00 buck, and slugs, should cover all the bases. I have a Model 1300 Home Defender with an AR style stock (collapsable). ARs are lighter, but you're still not going to carry it everywhere you go, and the "best" gun is the one you have with you, so don't be without a pistol on your hip.

You did say "Survival", not defense, right? Hard to beat the Ruger 10/22 Takedown. Fits in a backpack. Ammo is cheap and lightweight. Would still carry a big pistol too :-)
