Overland Trailers

I'm surprised I've not posted in this thread before.

I purchased a trailer in July of 2021 with the intent to turn it into an offroad trailer.

I started with this for $450

By memorial day of 2022, I had built this:

I still need to finish the corner trim, and possibly replace the rear door, but so far, it's been working exceptionally well for our family of 3.

The trailer has a 100Ah lifepo4 battery, 20A dc charger, 10 gallon water tank with pump.

The box is framed with 2x4s, and sheeted with 1/2 marine plywood.

We're doing two weeks on the Idaho bdr this year, so I need to do some maintenance on the hubs, and get new tires. I'll be storing the spare tire for the trailer in the stock spare location on my 2003 Xterra.

View attachment 4721 I've been perfecting our trailer since 09'. The tarp is custom made. I rounded off all the corners of the top sides and it is a completely water, and dust tight fit. We've been in torrential down pours and sandstorms of the southwest and nothing gets in. Up in the nose our Yeti 75 sits between the 10.5 gallon water tanks that are plumbed together into the pump, then a water line to the back deck kitchen.
The tail gate slides up and out and hinges on either side of the trailer for a side table. The homemade drawer sliders store cookware, eating utensils, etc etc. The center compartment is used for stowage, and it packs in real nice and tight. I'm using a lunette ring for my pintle hook, as I have never trusted regular ball hitches. There are some top shelf ball hitch type hook ups out there, but dollar for dollar, (about $100 including the welding) that 5 ton pintle hook will never wear out. Currenty we are running 255/85/16 KM2s. This winter I plan on geting a pair of 285 ATs to match the tow rig.. Eventually I plan on doing a walk around vid and going over everything in detail. One thing for sure, My trailer and all the included goodies cost about 1/4th the amount of the least expensive store bought trailers. Wow, a lot has changed with our trailer over the past several years. Upgraded springs & shackles, a complete 2x underframe upgrade, including a new tongue and upper framing to accommodate a rack and an RTT, dumped the yeti for an ARB mounted in the tow vehicle and am now runnning with 285s to match the tow vehicles tire size. I think we are finally done with our mods B14AA116-7CA4-4B15-AC3F-EF5EAD25372C.jpeg

Well here is my first attempt at an overland trailer. Not perfect, but it will do for now. Tons of storage and things I had just lying around went into this.

How it started, had to be pulled out of a field with the trash in it. Got a better price than asking.

Not too Shabby. It will be more heavy duty than a Northern Tool or harbor freight trailer. Plus there will be none others like it!

I'm about to start building a new one. Switching to a square drop style, myself.

Gonna start building this in a couple of weeks:

That will be nice. Lots of work but worth it in the end. I wimped out and bought mine. I had all intentions of building my own but I found an awesome deal on the Runaway Venturist. I am pretty happy with it. I am getting ready to start building a Fridge/Galley box on the front tongue like you have in your blueprint. Assuming that is what you have planned for it.

M416 with lock n roll hitch. I use Condition 1 cargo boxes to store gear in the trailer. I mounted a gas jerry can and a propane tank to fuel the camp kitchen. The trailer box stores extra recovery gear and a 12v marine battery that is charged by the Cherokee while on the trail to run lighting and a cpap at night. This is my current setup but I am about half way through building an enclosed trailer with slide outs and independent suspension. Hoping to have it done before summer is over.

It is a fridge box on the passenger side. The drivers side will be used for additional storage. Galley is in the rear of the trailer, and the actual cooking surface folds down very much like the off grid trailer setup.
