  • Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance this week and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

Newfoundland is a very interesting place with lots of great scenery. Amazingly there are no laundromats until you get over to StJohns. I mean none- fortunately we have plenty of clothes and fresh bedding that will do us an until we get to StJohns. But, to the traveler- be forewarned- bring at least two weeks worth of clothing. Oh, the people are cool as I’ve ever encountered. Next time up we will come either in the spring or fall time. Way too many touridts.

I used to use 5 gallon buckets for washing. Put a few outfits in the bucket with water a just a bit of soap. Put on the lid, strap the lid down, strap the bucket down and drive around. Would get my clothes decently clean. Worked out great when I was in the field for weeks at time in the service.

years back I was on a drill ship off the coast of Nova Scotia and the galley crew was from Newfoundland. they had on the menu "Newfoundland Steak" for dinner. it was freezing cold and sleeting out on deck so the thought of a nice hot steak cheered everyone up. got up to the serving line and it was fried bologna slices. I asked them where the steak was and they laughed and said that the fried bologna slices was "Newfoundland Steak"
so no...I don't trust Newfies anymore...

The people here crack me up, they are very humorous without trying to be.

Are you here now? what part?
Yes, currently at the Avalon Laundramat near StJohns. We will be on the island for a few more weeks- 3 nights reserved at Terra Nova, then we will be wandering the back roads to the ferry to Labrador, then headed down the Labrador highway back to civilization!

Awesome. you will be passing through here at some point......again. ha ha Message me when you are going to be passing through we will meet up somewhere. I am just off the TCH. What are you driving? If you want a back roads route to the west coast I can point you in that direction, you will have to back track a little bit when you get back on the TCH but it's all through the center of the island around Beothuk Lake.

After reading the night drive thread, I would like to put an "overland service announcement" here. Please please please if you are in Newfoundland, and have to drive in the night time, SLOW DOWN. The moose population here is large and they like the highways and roads as they are easy travel lanes. I drive no more than 85 km/h in the nighttime here even with Aux. lighting. They are dangerous! safe travels everyone!

Second that emotion. Seen a bit of moose coming off PEI and headed onrt 16. Rt 2. And 1 back to Maine, whether Calais or Houlton. The extensive fence capture system is a sight to see but still, plenty get through

We have a number of rules we are living by, one is, no driving more than 4-5 hours in a day. Another is- no night driving. Up here it is moose, a little further south it is deer. It’s not worth the risk. Another is- turn the underwear inside out after the third day!
