Last summer I mounted an owl house in one of the spruce trees out back, but nobody moved in. A couple of weeks ago, I was trimming some nearby branches, so decided to clean out any debris that might be in the box. I reached in with my gloved hand, and tried removing the mess of squishy leaves at the bottom, when I realized it wasn't leaves but a critter!
Thinking it was probably a squirrel, I stuck my phone inside and took a photo. Found there was an owl huddled in the bottom! With my phone on a pole, I checked later that day, and again a few days later, but no owl. I must have scared it off.
Last evening, Deb looked out, and saw something in the opening. Binoculars revealed an Eastern Screech Owl, and I scrambled for the camera and telephoto. Lousy photo, as I was shooting through a triple pane window, and using ISO 3200 to get a still image, but here's my new neighbor.
