Hi all!
I have long had a dream of overlanding in Africa, however I am aware of my limitations both with respect to local knowledge and mechanical skills which would prevent me doing something like this without some backup.
To get over these hurdles I am looking for a reputable company that could assist me in arranging the following trip:
1. Rent two fully kitted 79 series Land Cruisers with roof tents and all the needed goodies for overland travel. These will be driven by myself and a friend who will be joining this adventure as well as our significant others - in other words one couple per vehicle.
2. Provide a guide in a third vehicle that will help with the local knowledge (where to go, what to see, what to do, what NOT to do, where to shop for supplies+++).
3. Provide a good route for 10-15 days of overlanding with a focus on remote campsites, wildlife encounters, and cool roads to drive. Not keen on huge tourist traps with 30 other vehicles camping right next to us ;)
From a fair bit of youtubing I get the impression that South Africa would be a good starting point, and then driving in to Botswana or Namibia. Open for other suggestions though :)
I would really appreciate any suggestions for companies to contact, places to go or any other good tips and tricks. If someone has done something similar that would be great to hear about too! The goal is to have a fairly safe intro to overlanding in Africa, and a good trip for us to learn from more experienced people before we at some point head out for overlanding trips without a support vehicle.
Cheers
