Hey, has anyone played around with Meshtastic. As a communication setup. Just wondering I've made a couple for my kids and I, as stand by commo for dead zone areas.

Looking at their web site it seems to be a standard Mesh system relying on other devices to complete comms. It would be interesting to get some good actual use data.

Ive got a couple of nodes made. They work in dead zones, as long as there's other nodes in the area. And as with all radios line of site. But then I love on Arizona and I've gotten hits from Oregon and Washington. One from west Virginia. Just wondering if they would be usable in overlanding.

I have several radios and it is very interesting how many stations there are. A great way to communicate with family and friends

Im slowly trying to build out a little mesh in my area. My intention would be to use for private use in an a comms down scenario, but trying to get the infrastructure done myself seems to the problem. My nodes have heard a few others in the area, but I havent been able to put up a repeater at a hight point yet.


On a side note, Ive been playing with GMRS and using the BTECH GMRS APRS and messaging system. Seems to work, and the mobile I just put in the truck can put out 50 watts. I was able to hit a local GMRS repeater and from the truck at all the locations I would want to talk to my family. The plus side is that its slightly more user friendly then getting my wife to set up and use a mesh
