Hi Folks,

I hear Michaels message every time he releases a new video "it does not matter what you drive", and whilst we have some banter between us (particularly toyota and land rover owners), I see why he says it. In short, if you get up a mountain or over a desert, does it matter if it was a Jeep, Toyota, Land rover or vw camper van.

I came across this video on youtube. It is not in english, but compares an Lr4 on standard tyres against a Jeep Wrangler. Forgetting the actual video as irrelevant, look at the comments. Some really personal, insulting, ill informed and simply just wrong comments.

It is comments like these that make Michaels point so very wise. Does it really matter what make we drive, no. Can we have a laugh with each other by pointing out perceived short comings - i drive a land rover which is open to all sorts of jokes, but equally I know from my own experience that it is a reliable and capable off roader. Similarly, are the comments in the video justified, absolutely not and I am glad that forums like this exist for all overlanders to share experiences and advice.

It seems like a lot of other forums (and let's not even talk about how toxic YouTube comments are) exist largely as an arms-race/pissing contest: Who has the most obscure technical knowledge (which they may bless you with, but only after making damn sure you understand that they know way more than you, and also, why the hell didn't you just use the "search" feature, we've answered that question a thousand times already, GAWD!), the most heavily modded rig, the most time and money to commit. I like this site because it seems to be primarily about sharing enthusiasm (along with knowledge, of course). The desire to explore is universal, and beyond a willingness to learn and engage, there should be no prerequisites.
